The Role
I enjoyed this internship very much and it exceeded my expectations. The work was rewarding and enjoyable, the staff members were all really friendly and it is definitely somewhere I would like to work again. I enjoyed it far more than previous internships I have done with other similar firms.
My colleagues gave me work which actually contributed to the success of the project and I was trusted to work independently at times. My colleagues gave me feedback when I carried out a long task and told me how I had helped with the project. People tried to encourage me to ask questions about my work and were always keen to help.
My people manager and managers on jobs I worked on would always ask how I was getting on and if there was anything they could help with. It was really nice to see more senior staff members looking out for me as an intern, even if they were busy with their own work they would always make time for me.
There was a lot of variance in how busy I was. Sometimes I was on a busy job where I had constant work and other days I was working in the office which was quiet. I liked having this mixture. I understand the hours will be different as a graduate at times like busy season.
I was given responsibility to carry out work that needed doing not just do insignificant work. However, I was not doing anything which was too important due to my lack of experience and knowledge. I feel work I was given was at an ideal level of responsibility.
I have learnt a lot about accounting, business, excel and about the PwC systems. I have also learnt softer, non technical skills such as working in a team and communicating with senior people. I like how all of the work is reviewed by various layers of people meaning if I did make a mistake it wouldn't go unnoticed.
The Company
People in the office are chatty and it is a really relaxed atmosphere. People are doing their work but also enjoying themselves which makes for a really positive atmosphere. There are things going on like occasional quizzes and pool which is a nice break from work. The dress down in the office policy also helps productivity I think.
The internship was organised really well from start to finish. It began with a 3 day residential where we completed training and got to meet all of the other interns as well as staff members all the way up to partner. During the internship I was given a wide range of things to do and lots of things were arranged for me such as a day shadowing a partner or a day in a different department.
The firm sent us to a 3 day residential where we had tutors to sow us the systems and teach us about accounting and the audit process. Throughout the internship, people were showing me different things to help my development such as Excel shortcuts. We were given a laptop and other tech to do our work.
Company Parties/Events
Great prospects and lots of promotion and progression within the firm. However, if you do choose to leave the firm you'll have a great qualification and an outstanding name on your CV. The full time job looks good and definitely something I'd like to do once I have finished university.
The Culture
The office I am based in is quite small so there are only 4 interns in my office and the office is based out of town so there are not as many social opportunities. However, there are lots of work organised events where you can socialise with other staff members.
Very cheap, I was also able to live at home with my parents for my internship which is why I chose this location in the first place. However, even if I didn't then costs are still very low in the area for socialising, housing and other things, making the area quite appealing in my opinion.
Although the office is in an out of town location, employees still go on nights out in Nottingham, which isn't too far from the office. I go to uni in Nottingham and the nightlife there is great. The staff here seem to enjoy nights out in Nottingham too and always go out as colleagues.
I went to a murder mystery social one evening which was really fun. I also went to a games evening where we had a video games tournament, and went to a quiz for the new graduates joining the firm this September which was really nice as I got to meet more people who will be at the firm when I come back in 2019.
