The Role
I really enjoyed my internship - from the first day the working environment was so welcoming, I was given a project to take ownership of and there were lots of fun intern events put on by recruitment to enjoy.
On the whole, I felt really valued by my colleagues, particularly my close team who always treated me like a fellow team ember and not just a temporary intern. On occasion some colleagues were not that responsive to me asking for help or just to meet, but generally I think this was because of business not because I was an intern. On the whole, I felt very valued by the whole business.
Although my manage had never carried out before the work that my project centered around, she offered me as much support as possible and was always there to answer my questions. It was also great to be given a buddy (a grad who had done the internship) who was always there to chat more informally about my thoughts on the internship and offer guidance.
When you are just managing one project there will always be really busy and more quiet periods. Mid-way through the summer I had a lull in work, but there is always enough work that you can help other team members out with and as soon as I asked for more work I was busy again and enjoying working on something different to my main project.
I was given a lot of responsibility which is one of the best things about this internship. I had a big project to do - to create and deploy 6 trigger emails with a sizeable budget. I was able to take complete ownership of this project which added a lot of value to the business and made the internship very rewarding.
My degree is English with Education so in terms of relevant academic knowledge not much was gained as expected. However did gain important life skills such as networking (which is highly encouraged at amex), presenting, time management and a strong work ethic.
The Company
Fantastic atmosphere - everyone is so welcoming and it is very social in terms of term drinks and lunches often.
Very well organized - I got a buddy months before to chat to, had a welcome phone call and chat with my line manager before I started. They also place you on a project that they think is best suited to you based off your CV and performance at the assessment centre which is great. And on the first induction day they make the structure of the internship very clear.
They invested a lot - we had excel training and a presentation workshop, and you have a line manager who dedicates so much time to your development.

Extremely appealing - I worked hard and have been offered the grad job which I am thrilled with.
The Culture
Definitely - one of the best things about the internship is having a huge intern cohort. It made it so fun to socialize at lunch and at the events and go through everything together. There were also a lot of team drinks and lunches.
Living is obviously very expensive in London and socialising as well, but you do get discounts on pubs and restaurants in Victoria.
Good because it's London!
The volunteering opportunities are fantastic in Amex, as well as their colleague networks.
