    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my internship. I had a great role, a great team and met so many amazing people. I was assigned to a project that I felt was very well matched to my skill set and hence I really enjoyed doing it. The company puts a big focus on networking which meant there were lots of fun socials and opportunities to meet new people. Everyone at Amex is really friendly which makes it an even more enjoyable place to work.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued at Amex and was constantly thanked for my work. My work would always be shared in meetings like any other employee even though I was an intern which definitely made me feel like my work had value to the company and was having an impact .

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given great support and guidance by my manager, director and other members of the team. I would meet a couple of times a week with my manager or more if I needed extra help on and always felt like I could ask questions when I had them .

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I'd say I was just the right amount of busy. I had a set project to be getting on with throughout the internship and would help out where I could with other work in the team so I always had things to do but never felt like I couldn't get everything done.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given various responsibilities assisting different business units due to the nature of my project and obviously had the responsibility of making sure that appropriate pieces of work were done in time for certain meetings, presentations, shares and of course the end of the internship.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I've developed a vast skill set whilst at American Express, notably my networking skills and presentation skills. I hadn't done much presenting in the past so presenting frequently has definitely been invaluable and will help me a lot for when I'm back at university. I've also developed my analytical skills and have learnt a lot more about working in the finance industry and working for a large company.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in the American Express London office. Everyone seems genuinely happy to be at work which makes the atmosphere very positive. Also everyone at American Express is very friendly and sociable which makes it more enjoyable to go to work. The office is very nice and light which is also pleasant.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well structured and organized. There was an induction day which was very well orgnaised and helped us settle in and get to know each other and the company better quickly. There was also a mid programme review and final presentation so the 10 weeks were well structured. There was also a series of intern social events which were very well orgnaised and fun.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had various training days including a presentation training session and excel training where we picked up some valuable skills. We also had several training sessions in the earlier weeks where we learnt more about how to use the specific softwares used within the company which meant we could be more confident to get on with using them.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • During my time at American Express I felt it was the idea fit for me both in terms of the role and the culture so future employment prospects are very appealing and I'm looking forward to returning after my final year at university and developing my career at American Express.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were 22 interns in the London office alone across the various business units (and more in Brighton) so there was a great social scene amongst the fellow interns. There was a good group of us for going for lunch, going on nights out etc. There were also lots of socials organised by HR which meant there were lots of organised opportunities to socialize out of work and mix with the Brighton interns too.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Obviously being in London is relatively expensive to live in and socialise in but it wasn't as expensive s I thought. Rent is expensive and I found the tube surprisingly expensive but eating and drinking out wasn't as expensive as I was anticipating given London's reputation. The office canteen has a subsidized Starbucks so that helps!

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The London office is based in Victoria so there are loads of pubs, bars and restaurants in the area which means there are plenty of choices for after work drinks. There are also lots more options in the areas nearby. London in general obviously has lots of choice for nightlife.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were lots of opportunities to get involved in activities out of work such as the various intern socials (such as a London eye tour and boat party), team development days, business unit development days. The interns also had a community day where we went out and volunteered in a park.
