The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my summer internship here at American Express over the ten weeks.
I felt very supported by my managers and team over the summer. I was lucky to be put in a large team and they all involved me with their various projects which meant I had a good exposure to different clients and tasks. Having multiple people to report into was also great as I could ask them all about different things and they could support me in different ways.
Due to the nature of the role, I went through busy and quiet periods which was difficult at times. It is difficult on an internship to be given certain tasks as it is a concern that you aren't permanent staff so I think this would be trend wherever you choose to intern.
I was given complete ownership of one of the projects I got to work on whilst still being able to ask my manager for help on it which was really rewarding. The other projects I got involved with I didn't have much responsibility on but was happy to just take part.
The role here in marketing isn't related to my law degree however I feel the time management and planning skills will be useful for my final year work ethic. Also I have developed my Microsoft excel skills which will be useful in future as well as the experience overall helping to improve my professionalism in an office environment.
The Company
I loved the atmosphere in the office, everyone was super friendly and willing to help. I emailed lots of people to network and they all were keen to meet with me and share their experiences. It isn't a scary corporate environment like I thought it would be and people at the different seniority levels were all equally welcoming.
I felt the internship was well organised and I was lucky I had ownership of a few projects however I do think some other interns struggled with just having one big project. The general organisation by campus recruitment was great and I felt like I knew what was going on throughout the 10 weeks.
I think American Express has invested a lot of time into us interns in terms of the team members who sacrificed their own time to help me and giving me work to do with real value. My managers were also helpful in giving me feedback about how I was doing which I feel was invaluable.

I was delighted to be offered a place on the marketing graduate scheme which I have accepted. I think undertaking the internship has made me more excited to work there as I loved my time over summer and now know exactly what I'd be doing upon my return, it also takes the pressure of doing all the applications again during final year.
The Culture
My team was super social! They always encouraged me to come for their drinks or after work meals which was so friendly of them and nice to be involved. We also had many events organised by campus recruitment which were really fun and all of us interns became great friends throughout the summer.
I lived in student halls that I rented out just over the summer as I am not from London and do not go to university there either like most of the other interns. It was expensive but we were paid for the internship so I could afford it although I did have to pay for it all upfront before I had received a paycheck.
I lived in Angel and there were so many good places to go around that area but around Victoria itself (where the office was) didn't have as many places to go or they were all quite expensive bars etc.
