The Role
In my opinion, I really really enjoyed my internship here at Lloyds Banking Group. This opportunity allowed me to make lots of new friends and this has helped me increase my network of people. This also allowed me to experience a first-hand office work environment, in which not a lot of people at my age wold experience.
I think my colleagues around me have valued me a lot. My manager has delegated many tasks to me to be completed. I feel a sense of responsibility to carry out the designated tasks. I am also included in team meetings, team social events within and outwith work, which I really enjoyed.
My manager was very supportive in me, he was able to provide work load that suited me but also challenged me. My manager was able to try and make my internship experience as insightful as possible by allowing me time to participate in the charity challenge and arranging job shadowing, to understand more about Lloyds banking group.
In my opinion, I was delegated dailies and other tasks, so I was always kept busy. In my spare time, I would have training modules to be completed at my own time, which kept me busy. In addition, if there was time spare during the charity challenge, I would help the team with organising events.
I think I was given a lot of responsibilities because I had dailies to do. So I was responsible for reporting back everyday on the data outputted from the systems. I was also delegated the task on training a few colleagues up on the dailies that I was doing for them to takeover this role after the internship.
I have developed many skills, and in my opinion the most important one that I have developed would have been time management. I had to ensure that I carried out all the tasks on time everyday, so I have to organise and plan out my time to fit in dailies, projects, meetings and training modules.
The Company
My office was not silent, but quiet enough to do get on with work without distractions. Everyone here is very friendly, so there is always chat, and you always feel like you can fit in and start a conversation with anyone. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and the people here too.
I think the overall internship was well organised as in I was allocated resources. However, acquiring system access took a while and would be beneficial if this was all set up before hand. There was no specific schedule that I had to follow strictly so this allowed me to explore the roles in different teams.
Lloyds banking group allowed me to expand my networking opportunities by organising network lunch n learn. My manager has also gave me opportunities to shadow others. In addition, the training modules on Discover learn were very beneficial and has helped me understand more about the bank as well as different skills required.
In the future I hope that I can do another internship with LBG, I would also like to join the graduate scheme as well, because I believe that LBG can help me grow and explore more opportunities. LBG is a large organisation, and has many opportunities to develop myself and make myself more employable.
The Culture
I think there was a good social scene amongst the internship students as LBG organises Lunch n learn sessions to network with other interns from the same offices which gives you an insight of how the internship programme is helping not only you but others too. The colleagues at my work always organise social events which is very interesting to join in with.
I was living in my own flat, and LBG reimbursed for the majority of the rent which was helpful. The socialising in the area of work is very good. The colleagues here at work always have events in which they greatly encouraged to participate many activities outside work to have a work-life balance.
The nightlife here in Edinburgh was amazing. Edinburgh is a very lively city, and with the Edinburgh fringe festival on, it made Edinburgh really busy and fun. There were always events and shows on so you would never get bored. The city itself had many restaurants, museums and parks to visit.
There were many opportunities to get involve outside work such as with the charity challenge there were many teams putting on events to raise money for mental health UK. This allowed me to socialise and have fun besides just working. With other interns, I was able to network with them and build relationships with their team too.
