    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Very friendly and capable coworkers and other interns made it a great place to do an internship and learn about banking and finance. HR also organised many interesting seminars, events, and corporate social responsibility activities involving interns. The work itself was meaningful, although there was not a lot of freedom in choosing what projects we got to work on. To top it off, good pay and a beautiful office in Canary Wharf.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was treated as a full-fledged member of the project team and given responsibility to work on core deliverables of the project. As time went on, my supervisor realised that I could be further challenged with more responsibilities, which would also be a good learning opportunity for me, so I was introduced to two other (separate) projects that I helped out on at the same time. This was, of course, all decided with my input to make sure I wasn't over-encumbered with work.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was a week of training before the work started which gave us an introduction to the working style of the projects as well as background on the bank. After beginning work, I always felt comfortable asking for direction and advice from my supervisor as well my assigned buddy and mentor. There was also a series of mandatory training programs that we had to complete which gave us a deeper understanding to certain aspects of banking.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The Business Analyst (Technology) role had a good work-life balance. When there was not enough to do, my manager let me help out on other projects that helped to give me a greater understanding of the scope of work happening in COO. Most interns did 9-5 (in COO) although I stayed a little longer because I wanted to.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was treated as a full member of the project teams I worked on and given responsibility to work on core deliverables of the projects. I sat in and contributed to meetings including those with Ds and MDs. The work I delivered was used in the projects and presented to MDs like any full-time employee's work.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I definitely improved on my excel and powerpoint skills, and only a small amount of programming, although that was just due to the nature of the project I was assigned. Most other COO interns did more programming whilst I did a lot more of building business cases and other business analyst work.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Friendly, fun atmosphere but with a strong sense of determination to get work done, which I thought was great. My supervisor would regularly invite me to coffee meetings to see how I was doing as well as set me up to meet different people in the bank to build connections.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • HR did a good job of organising training week, seminars, supplementary training, and Corporate Social Responsibility events. The work itself was meaningful and of reasonable workload. The projects were assigned to interns based on the different line managers choosing interns amongst the pool of CVs/applications. I personally got a project that I really enjoyed, although some of the interns wished they were working on more interesting projects.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Deutsche Bank gave the interns a week of training before we started our projects. (There is a much longer training period for the graduate program). After that, there was additional training on finance/banking that we needed to complete on the computer during the span of the internship. There were also speeches and seminars especially for interns to attend.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I got a graduate job with Deutsche Bank to begin after I complete my degree next year. They retain a decent proportion of the COO intern pool, so the employment prospects are quite good! They are especially keen on engineers, although I was admitted to the Business Analyst line (you get to do a bit of both in the graduate scheme anyway).

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, I became good friends with some of the other Deutsche Bank interns and there were regular meetups that we organised ourselves. HR also organised a few introductory and closing social events for the interns. Additionally, we often worked together for our group projects and met up for lunch in the company canteen (also pretty good).

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Living in London is never cheap, but the good salary definitely helps. The company canteen is fairly priced - I have a pretty big appetite and usually spent about £5-7 on lunch on a plate piled high with food. There is also enough time at the end of the workday to cook dinner!

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • London has no shortage of Nightlife if you are looking for it.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • London has a lot to explore. I often went out for dinners during the week, and I managed to occupy practically every weekend with activities with my university friends and other interns, making friends along the way. The Deutsche Bank Art program also allows all its employees, including interns, free entry to a number of normally paid art galleries around London.
