    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. I was given a great deal of responsibility. I was put in charge of an important project in my third week and saw this project through to the end. This made the internship very rewarding - and gave me something really valuable to put on my CV.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt extremely valued by my colleagues. In my penultimate week, many of them sent my line manager and I a thank you to say how much they had appreciated my help and support. They were very helpful and friendly. The atmosphere was very calm, warm and welcoming which was nice.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given support by my line manager when I asked him/her. They were extremely busy, however; which meant that I felt like a bit of a burden asking them so many questions. They were understanding and devoted time to me to help me with my issues, but I do feel that it was another burden on my line manager which they didn't really need.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was busy, as I was put in charge of such a major project, but I was never so busy that I felt stressed or anxious. It was a good balance. It tended to be very busy in the morning and then got quieter as the day went on, so it was good for me to catch up on outstanding tasks in the afternoon.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a great deal of responsibility. I was in calls with Tesco partners and I was the only Tesco representative in the call. This was a huge responsibility, not to mention the major project which I was in charge of. This was good, as it made me feel like I was a valuable member of the team and not just an intern being strung along for 10 weeks.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • In terms of my degree, I have learnt many transferrable degrees on the internship which I can carry into my degree. Time management, project management, professional communication are all skills which I have developed and will be able to carry through to my degree and future employment. I'm sure there are more skills which I have not even noticed that I have developed.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was nice, friendly, warm and not as corporate as you might assume Tesco to be. People chat with one another and help each other. The dress code is smart/casual, which helps as people do not act like robots and are much more personable. This makes people much more approachable, which I really liked.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was set up very well. There were meet and greet events in the first week to get to know the other interns and to learn a bit about the Tesco way-of-life. Additionally, there were masterclasses scheduled during the internship for us to develop our skills and these events were easy to sign up for and (some of them) included a FREE lunch!

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As I stated previously, masterclasses were hosted by the internship team. These events featured internal speakers and were beneficial to learn more skills. There are also more events held at Tesco which any employee could attend, which featured speakers, but I couldn't seem to find where these were listed. Additionally, there were speakers on team days from external companies including one from a very large online company.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The future employment prospects are very good at Tesco. Due to its size, the opportunities to progress within the company are huge. People I worked with have worked for the company for a few years and worked within a large number of different functions and teams during their time here.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • For me personally, it was poor. I was the only person doing the specific internship I was in, so I was not really spending as much time with the other interns as the other interns were. I am aware that the other interns became good friends because they worked with each other. More could be done to integrate the interns in the smaller internships to meet other interns, as otherwise cliques seem to form and people get rather protective of their friend groups...

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living in Welwyn Garden City is quite high. It's quite close to London which makes renting quite pricy. A lot of interns lived in London (Finsbury Park) and commuted in every day, which is VERY expensive to do as Finsbury park is not a cheap place to live. Welwyn is reasonable and the internship salary covers it nicely.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Absolutely horrendous. There is a pub in Welwyn... that's about it. If you want nightlife, live in London and commute, or just go there on weekends and get the train back to Welwyn late at night. Personally, I don't really go out, so this was fine for me, but if you are that way inclined, I would be cautious about living in Welwyn. Maybe Hatfield/Stevenage are better?

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were opportunities to do charity work outside work. Also, thousands of colleagues ran the race for life, which is a great chance to get out the office and raise money for a good cause. There is a football pitch on campus too, which I assume has some sort of league going on (maybe?). So, there are also sporting opportunities to pursue.
