    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was such a good experience. I really enjoyed everyday. There was so much effort put into making sure that all of us interns had a good experience and learnt a lot. It was amazing being a part of such a well known organisation and a large group. I just wish it was a bit longer.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • All the interns feel like a major part of the team and get to meet really senior members of the organisation, who are really keen to give help and advise. I really enjoyed working with my team who were keen to invite me out a lot and make me feel a part of the group.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a lot of support. It was very clear what I was supposed to be doing each day.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I wasn't as busy as some people were in other teams or in other divisions. I did feel like I could have been doing more at some points. I was always interested in the work given to me however, but probably could have coped with a little it more to do.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was quite happy to find that some of the work that I had produced had been implemented by my team. It was nice that some of my work was used by the wider team as well. I was given a lot of feedback as to my earlier work and given ways to improve my work to better help the team.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt a lot of transferable skills such as presentation skills that can be utilised in any environment. I also learnt other important skills such as good time-keeping and team work. We had to improve on our numerical skills in order to get the internship which will definitely be very useful.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • On the floor we work, there aren't any offices, everyone is on the same floor which promotes a really inclusive environment. One intern is working beside the CEO and can ask questions. It was a really laid-back and enjoyable atmosphere. We had dress-down Fridays and PIMS day. People were relaxed and at ease at work.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well organised. There is a clear structure to the internship. With activities clearly documented well in advanced. We all have a 'buddy' that we can have for reference and had all intern events planned so that we always knew what we were doing and what the events entailed. We also had a daily planner to keep ourselves organised.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company puts a lot of effort into 'lunch and learns', making sure that we as a group have a lot of learning and development opportunities from senior members of the group. There are also graduate speakers that came to speak with us.The group also really encouraged networking to learn and develop from senior team members.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • This would be such a good place to work in the future, so many people have been here for decades and have no plans for leaving as it is a company that really invest in their human capital. They also give graduates the opportunity to get their CFA paid for by the group.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • 5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived from home which helped me save a lot of money whilst in London, as I know many of my friends had to spend a significant amount of money on rent. Socialising in London is always a bit expensive but it was worth good experiences. HSBC also offer 'Perks at Work' to subsidise the cost of certain activities e.g. discounted cinema tickets.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife was excellent. Lots of opportunities to go out to bars, clubs and all the other things inside of London. I just wish the placement lasted longer. It also depends where you're commuting from. I could have done a bit more if I had lived in the city and not greater London

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I didn't get involved in any activities outside of work such as sport, but I know some of the other interns played football at lunch
