    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?

    • I didn’t feel supported at my job and didn’t find the work stimulating.

    • I felt like a loose part and I think many of my colleagues didn’t understand what the programme was.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?

    • I was given menial tasks and didn’t feel like I could express my opinions without being shut down. I felt that the experience was demoralising at times.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?

    • I was definitely busy- lots to do in a given time period. Some more support and guidance would have been helpful.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?

    • I was given responsibility over most tasks but not entire control. This was probably good considering that I had no previous retail experience.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?

    • Definitely useful- I definitely gained more real world experience and was able to experiment with different leadership styles.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?

    • Unsupportive and not well organised.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?

    • Poorly organised. There was a store familiarisation factor which should have been longer (2 weeks rather than 1). I enjoyed going to the call centre but I did not find the day at the express store to be useful.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?

    • I enjoyed the insights report day and the programme director checked in on me which was reassuring. However I would have like to have felt more supported by the colleagues in the store itself.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?

    • I did not have a positive experience in the store. However I would consider a position in head office.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?

    • One event organised during my work hours that I couldn’t attend. I wish there were more events organised both in store and by head office.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?

    • The store was close to home so I lived at home. Petrol costs weee not expensive and can be reimbursed.

    • No experience with the nightlife in the area.

    • No events I can think of.
