    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my time here at Savills Aberdeen. The whole office couldn't have been more accommodating right from the very start. I was able to gain a useful insight into the 'working life' of Business Space Associates and also those in other departments. I was never given a mundane task, or treated like I was anything less than a fully fledged member of the team. I was treated as an equal and I cannot thank everyone enough.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • Again, reiterating what I have said in the previous question. I was actually given real work which had to be completed for clients. I was given the opportunity to email clients first hand, to email other real estate employees within Aberdeen and best of all, get out, complete viewings and do some networking with a whole host of different people.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • I was always under the supervision of Simpson Buglass (MD), Dan Smith (Director) or another member of the team. I was constantly being instructed on my next task, and there was always someone to talk through exactly what needed done. That being said, I was given tasks to do myself as I wanted to prove I could do work alone.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My degree is Finance and Real Estate so that which I have learned over the past 4 weeks will only benefit me in the future. Not only from an educational point, but the social skills, and general IT skills that I have learned from my time in the office. I hope to continue to develop these skills once I return to university.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • I enjoyed the structure of the program. I was at an internship before this and there was no structure and it was a bit chaotic. I liked that the staff made a conscious effort to put work my way as I was more than willing to complete any task. The project was also a great way for me to prove to myself and others all that I had learned during my time here.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • There was always a positive atmosphere in the office, there was never a dull moment. There was always laughs and jokes amidst the serious work. It was a very relaxed office space and one which I felt like I fitted in rather well. No effort had to be made in order to enjoy my time with all of the staff here.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The phone call seminars, of which there was roughly 2 per week, showed that Savills wanted to invest time into the Summer Scheme Students. Also, sitting in an office beside the Managing Director and Director and being able to ask them any question at any time only gave me a greater insight into the role.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • I believe I lived the 'Business Space Associate' role for the 4 weeks I was in the office. I was never once told to go and 'make a coffee' or told to do some filing. I was always given work, and if I wasn't working, I was out of the office meeting clients and conducting viewings or valuing properties.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • I feel very fortunate that I was able to fit in with the culture rather effortlessly. I didn't have to force myself outwith my comfort zone. I'm a rather confident, chatty individual and that was able to be reflected in my role. The perfect balance of 'work hard/play hard' was shown to me during my time in the office.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • I had all but written off a career in real estate as I did not want to be a typical 'estate agent'. I was set on going down the route of finance and working in Mergers & Acquisitions. However, I can now positively say, my mind has been changed and going into my final year I am going to consider and apply for a career path in both finance and real estate.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • I was not expecting to be paid for my time with Savills. As I am a student, with little experience, the value of coming into the office and working with a company like Savills was invaluable. Being able to talk in interviews for graduate placements about my real life experience is only going to benefit me.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • On my first day I was taken round everyone in the office and had coffee with 3 members of staff within different departments so that they could give me an insight into their roles but also get to know me. Everyone wanted to know about me and my personal life, showing a genuine interest in what I do outside of work. Proving to me that I have been accepted as an equal within the team.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • I was able to socialise with, not only employees from Savills, but those from Ryden, Knight Frank, CBRE and many more. I was able to attend meetings with people and have a chat with them about what they do on a daily basis. I have been invited on the office night out after my time with the office is over as my colleagues would like me to attend.

    5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Not necessarily what activities people get involved in through Savills. However, the director did play a lot of golf with clients so I know that is an obvious plus side to the job. On the other hand, I was able to learn what my colleagues did out of work in their own spare time. Whether it be fishing, swimming, running, cycling, crossfit etc... It was all interesting to hear.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • I will most certainly be recommending this opportunity to the boys and girls in the year below me at university. I can only think of good things to say about my time within the office and all that I have learned. I would hope to continue my relationship with all members of staff within the office for the foreseeable future.
