    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I struggled because I was placed in a very isolated accommodation at the beginning and therefore transferred cities 2 weeks in. Coming to Lloyds in Halifax (a commute) has not been enjoyable, having spent the first couple of weeks working away from the team because the area was too busy and I initially needed a monitor. The work was tedious (counting words on a page and filling them into a database all day everyday for weeks) and I failed to learn a lot about the business or feel comfortable to ask for shadowing time because of the near deadline for such a large amount of work. However once that was done the work got slightly more interesting as there were more meetings and variety, which made the end of the internship more enjoyable.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My Line Manager was very busy so we were given a task manager, who was on holiday often (which is fine, people go on holiday in summer, just bad timing for us). I worked with another Intern and we shared some communication issues, so work was not the easiest. However in the middle of our placement we got a graduate supervisor, who made us feel more valued and made work easier.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Not a lot from my line manager or task manager, as with the nature of agile working we are often in different places and people were on holiday. However when I asked for help I received it and our graduate supervisor guided us a lot. It was a complex project and there were a lot of complexities.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Original, way too busy. We had no time to shadow or do our mandatory training because the deadline was so imminent (we had to go through 5000 links in a couple of weeks), my colleague ended up staying a couple hours later most nights and it was far too much. Once that stopped it got easier and things felt more achievable, but there were also lulls.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The project had a deadline for the 1st of November, so the work we did was crucial for the team to meet the deadline. Whilst this was daunting it gave our work purpose, which motivated me more. However it did induce stress and as an intern I felt I didn't know enough about the business to do all of it efficiently, I think I did though so I've pushed myself.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I feel like I have gained from this internship, but not in the conventional way. I know that I don't want to do a job like this where I have to commute and sit in an office 9-5, I want to be more creative and not sat in front of a computer all day. I have developed skills such as communication with colleagues though.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It depends, Monday's and Friday's were in a separate office alone (which I admittedly preferred cause it's closer), when I eventually got a place sitting with the team it was nice and chatty, but for a while t was lonely and isolated. It was different in different ways I GUESS.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It wasn't. This wasn't an opportunity for me to learn, I just did the work they needed doing. I'm doing my balance scorecard in the last couple weeks because I wasn't told about it, admittedly I was moved here because I was in a bad place in Birmingham but I think the organisation could be better.

    2/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company did, but I haven't had the chance to do these things until the last couple of weeks because of the sheer intensity of the work. There are courses on resilience and branding which seem very interesting and I look forward to filling them out now that I've finished the analysis.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would never want to do a job like this again, because I think Lloyds isn't organised very well and I've discovered personally that this kind of job just isn't for me. It was good experience and I've learnt a lot about myself but It's not what I want to do.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • When I was in my first week, not at all. There was me and one other intern in the accommodation block and it was incredibly isolating, whilst In Leeds it was very social and everyone got to know eachother and spend evenings together. It is much much nicer to be in a social environment.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Decent, our travel to and from work is covered and we get paid a lot. Leeds and Halifax our relatively cheap places so I never felt like I couldn't go out and socialise because of the expense. The social scene in Leeds is really booming (Halifax is a bit dead mind.)

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Leeds is a very good place for a night out, whilst the world cup was on we were out a lot and it was a great way to mingle and socialise with the other interns. I went on one night out here because I went home most weekends and I really did have a great time.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yeah definitely, I lived with the other interns so there was always stuff to do. The only downside was that the commute really tires you out so you feel as If there's not much time to do anything outside of work. When you make the time though, there's always something to do.

    4/5
