    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I would not change anything about the way BuroHappold approached an internship application as well as the work process. I have learnt invaluable practical skills I needed, as well as I have made decision about my Msc programme. I have profited tremendously, but I also enjoyed the internship itself very much. I liked the atmosphere I worked in, I did not feel stressed and I could learn effectively.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt that my colleagues trusted me and were always there to help me. They gave me responsible but achievable tasks. They also made sure that the work I did was checked and I could get feedback on it. They appreciated my help and opinion. They made me feel like a part of the team!

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I got great support from my line managers as well as collagues. The line managers from both teams Sustainability and Structures made sure that I am on top of my tasks but also that I am not alone and can always use their help and support if I need to. They helped me organise and prioritise my tasks, but also they helped me in questions about my degree and what path I should take to achieve the objectives I set up for myself.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Depends on a day and project I worked on. There was almost no time I had no task to do. Every day I had some parts to finish and something to start, I has a good schedule. I also was not stressed, cause I had enough of the workload, but not too much as well. This way I could learn effectively.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I would say that I was responsible almost as much as a regular Graduate engineer. Some tasks I did were aligned with what my graduate engineer collaegue did. I feel I was very responsible but also the tasks suited my knowledge and skills from university.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It will assist me tremendously. I believe that learning engineering softwares like Rhino, Harpoon or CFX are essential for future work in industry and for my degree. Also the design process I learnt in structures team will be great help for the next structures module I will attend as it is important part of my degree. I can use them daily during my course, also on my research project.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was great, I felt like a part of family. Everyone shares experience, skills and everyday life. They are open for discussion but also can support with any questions/ problems I have. They indeed are professionals and are very pleasant to work with. If they criticise it is only for improving my development.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Everything was well organised, from the moment I entered the office I felt like I am taken care of. There was [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] who showed me around I took care of my documents, then [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] who was one of my line managers and who led my first project. I had contact to [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] who was leading my Scholarship and placement, I could always contact her with any queries. It was all clear and organised.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • For personal training they invested a lot of time to advice on technical side of projects, but also for my own development there were/ are social events that they recommended. They also gave me opportunity to develop social, team skills, logical thinking and time management skills through projects I worked on.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I am definitely going to apply for graduate position when I finish my degree. I definitely think about BuroHappold in a long run. The fact they provide broad spectrum of disciplines in engineering makes me feel confident I want tot develop my skills there.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, there was just one other intern and we got along well. He was finishing his bachelor degree this year and we had a lot of discussions and useful advices exchanged. We also could support each other, it was easier for us to understand how it feels to be in a company like this, amongst professionals.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It is affordable for an intern like me. It depends exactly where we go to/ if we share etc. However, to get a decent meal and a drink once a week I could definitely do that with co-workers. Also, even as a student I think you get additional discounts ( 10%) which is quite helpful.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The office is located close to the busy area with a lot of clubs and bars. It is a good and safe location, as well as it is affordable there. I think it is 7 not 10/10 because it is very into themes and some people may not find it interesting, f.ex tapas bars, Mexican bars, etc.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, there was a bee hunt in Manchester, site visits, team lunches, meetings, additional interesting presentations from external people and people from company about existing and future projects. There were lunches provided really often, that made us spend some time together, have fun, eat, socialise, get to know each other and that was important.
