    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed being given responsibility to work on genuine projects throughout and was often given different things to do throughout, so the work wasn't monotonous. Sometimes the work I was given seemed somewhat tedious and felt like they needed to keep me busy, but generally I felt I could make a difference in parts.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I initially felt welcome, and multiple people would come up and introduce themselves to me and invite me to coffee to get to know them and the business better. However the work environment seemed to become slightly hostile towards the end and there were clearly tensions in the office between some colleagues which meant the atmosphere was not the friendliest.

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • When I received guidance from my line and project managers it was extremely helpful. They gave me feedback when I asked for it and gave very useful constructive criticism (which I asked for). The people I worked with always helped me when I needed it, but there were times when I hadn't seen my manager or project leader for a couple of weeks.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I often found myself with nothing to do during the first half, and as a result was quite bored. This was down to my supervisor having other commitments throughout. On my second project I was a lot busier and had about the right amount of work, which was much better.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I understand that interns don't have the necessary skills to produce useful deliverables, so I see why there is limited responsibility, but I was exposed to clients often which helped my development. I also had a Corporate Social Responsibility project on the side which gave a good opportunity to be a lead on the project and deal with responsibility.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed very useful skills for the workplace, such as how to present, improving the presentation of Powerpoint slides and reports in Word. I developed my Excel skills hugely in the 9 weeks and was able to try new skills such as VBA and Alteryx. None of these relate to my degree, however.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • 2/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • We were all given a line manager and a buddy in the office, and there were well set up projects in both the team I worked in, and outside of the team (Corporate Social Responsibility project). There were arranged feedback sessions and presentation days, whilst still being given enough freedom to incur some sort of responsibility. Sometimes there were issues but these were rare—overall a very organised and well managed internship scheme.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • 4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • A decent number of people are offered the grad scheme, although the company are no very clear about how the offer system works throughout the internship and in general the managers don't know how it works. It is hard to know what working life will be like with the company because interns can't fully experience the work full-time employees do.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were around 60 interns on the placement with me, 30 of whom were in London (where I worked). There were lots of opportunities to interact with other interns throughout and most of the interns were genuinely nice people, however insurance comes across as quite a boozy idustry, which won't necessarily appeal to everyone.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London in general, especially in the city, is very expensive compared to other parts of the country. There are more reasonably priced places around if you know where to look but for a student, already encumbered with debt, living and socialising in the city is barely affordable on an intern's wage.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • 4/5
