    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my eight week internship in the Corporate Risk and Broking segment of Willis Towers Watson. This was a truly insightful experience where I gained a wealth of knowledge about the Insurance and Insurance Broking industry. I was seated in the Bid Management department of Global Transportation where I was actively involved in creating documentation for sales.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt extremely valued by my colleagues and my Line Manager. Despite being seated in one area, I was able to arrange meetings with key individuals from any aspect of the company and learn more about their roles which they were very kind to share. In the team I was situated made me feel very valued - with us often having team lunches and drinks after work.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I enjoyed the perks of having a very supportive Line Manager who I would not feel afraid to approach if I had any issues or did not understand a task. Oftentimes, my Line Manager and I went for drinks where she mentored me and gave me guidance - something that is invaluable.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Being part of a very busy and dynamic team, there was not a second where I was bored or had nothing to do. From the beginning, we were thrown into the deep end and this flow of work continued throughout the internship. This was brilliant as we really got stuck into the role and learnt a lot about the industry and company quickly.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a high level of responsibility from the start of the internship. I was in charge of the work I produced which would then be checked over and perfected by my Line Manager and sent to clients. This high level of responsibility really gave me the value factor.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • During my internship, I gained a plethora of skills that will hold great value in my degree studies and beyond. As a LLB Law student, my experience in the Insurance industry marries well with this. The major skills and training I gained from this internship such as (among others) professional drafting, networking, time management and resilience will without doubt help me through my final year of university and beyond.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was generally very positive and motivating. There was no pressure to get things done and everyone was generally very approachable, friendly and helpful. They enjoyed when you asked questions and wanted to learn more. There were often social events and team building activities bringing everyone together.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was extremely well organised with a range of activities and sessions for us to partake in and learn more about the business and industry. There was a nice balance between work and training/learning sessions, and there was never a moment where things seemed in disarray. Every session was timely.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?

We were supported with our networking skills, knowledge of the industry and our presentation skills, with specific sessions tailored to this.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a relatively good social scene amongst the interns, and Willis Towers Watson made a real effort and investment to bring us together through team building exercises/days and social nights. This was very helpful and important as it brought us together and enabled us to support each other throughout the experience.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Being in the City of London, the cost of socialising is quite high due to the prime location, however, the cost of many of the socials were supported by Willis Towers Watson. Fortunately in terms of living, I was based outside of London living with family so I personally wasn't greatly impacted though travel was relatively pricey.
