    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship for many reasons. I worked with a wonderful team who were always supportive and there to answer my questions. I was also entrusted with responsibility which made me feel valued overall.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Being entrusted with important tasks that were essential to the functioning of the team made me feel very valued and as though they had confidence in what I have learned.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • At every opportunity my managers were supportive and answered all my questions. There were of course times where they were incredibly busy with a high volume of work and a low head count but they truly did their best to ensure I was looked after and had stuff to do that I understood.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Things varied day to day. As the tasks I was entrusted with often come in on a case by case basis it is hard to plan around it. Some instances I had very little to do and other times I was completely swamped. I found this a good learning experience.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At the beginning very little but as it got towards my final weeks I was given a large amount of responsibility in terms of BAU tasks. At first it was outwith my comfort zone but I have really enjoyed the learning experience of being chucked in at the deep end as I found this the best way to learn about my team and its role.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have in fact completed my degree but I really wish I had done this internship between my 3rd and final year of my law degree. I have learned so much in terms of time management and project planning that I really feel that would have benefitted me when it came to planning my dissertation and revision.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in the office was always light hearted and friendly. I did not meet one person who made me feel out of place or unwelcome. I really enjoyed the atmosphere as it was so friendly and it allowed me to be more open in asking questions and seeking guidance.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The general overall organisation of internship events varied. Most events were planned in events, particularly the bigger ones such as the Charity Challenge, but there was an occasion where I was put on a training less than 24 hours before it was due to begin and this was then cancelled after I had arrived to it. There could have perhaps been more notice given to managers about events that we were on as I always had to update my manager of when I would be out of office. However, overall things were generally well organised and beneficial to my experience.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I feel we all as interns are incredibly lucky to have had the opportunities that have been given to us through our time here. There were general internship events which allowed us to learn essential office skills, such as Excel training and presentation skills. We were also given many learning opportunities that we could choose whether or not to participate in. I thoroughly enjoyed the events that were put on for us and they have been one of my highlights of my internship, particular the QA "Creating Positive Outcomes" training.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing. It has been made clear from my time here that the company really invests in its staff and that is something that few companies do nowadays. If I was lucky enough to be offered a role here I know I would be entering a role with great potential for personal development and career progression.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I feel in my stream in particular we were all very friendly and helpful to one another. You could always depend on another intern to be there when you needed something and offer their skills where they would be helpful. We have created a good relationship and I am very grateful for this. I also feel this was encouraged by our teams.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Very luckily, the company paid for my rent throughout my time here. This meant that I was only concerned with food bills and the general cost of enjoying the city. Being based in Edinburgh, it is not the cheapest place to stay, but you do not have to make it expensive. In general restaurants are not extortionate, some bars can be on the dear side but there is easily plenty that are reasonable to make up for it.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Edinburgh is incredibly busy, especially during the festival. There are many nightclubs and bars in the city centre. Although I did not go to these during my 10 weeks I know from living in the city previously that the nightlife here is amazing. There are also many late night shows during the festival if you prefer entertainment to clubbing.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were of course many opportunities in which the interns as a group arranged nights out. However, there were also many things going on in the city that you could get involved in. Such as the festival and there are many sports events that go on throughout the Summer in Edinburgh.
