    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The work itself was not the most exciting but there's only so much they can give us with our limited knowledge of Audit. However this was offset by the regular socials that we partake in and you certainly make a lot of friends over the internship - it's a great summer and bittersweet when you finish.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • There is so much respect between collegues, trainees, partners, managers etc. You do not feel like an 'intern'. Everyone values your opinions and you do work that really matters. Your colleagues are there to support you in every way possible, don't be afraid to ask questions whenever you feel like it.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Managers are only a 'skype' message away and seniors are often working on the job with you, so there is so much support if you're stuck with something. We had regular meetings with our counselling managers to make objectives, check progress and make sure we were on track and we had regular reviews.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The trick is to keep asking for work and push yourself. Your workload is what you make it. There are days when you have so much to do, you have to push yourself to finish the work and there are other days when you're struggling to find something to do but you can always do online learning.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • We were given as much responsibility as people on the 3 year graduate programme and our work was used to form the final audit opinions. We were able to liase and engage with the client on a regular basis and were involved in team meetings and also emails between the partners and managers on the job etc.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Developed lots of skills such as; public speaking, time management, budgeting etc. which will help increase your confidence, allows you to better deal with criticism and knockbacks and have faith in your own abilities. This will help you to be a more confident person at university and better manage your time.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • As an audit intern, I was hardly ever in the office but it was very relaxed even though people were working hard. People made conversations with me and often offered to get me a drink. On the first day, we were taken out for lunch and made to feel very welcome.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very organised. We always had a plan of what we were going to do. In the training week, we were busy for every hour of the day and during the working week, we always had a schedule on BDO's online platform, so we knew what we had to do day to day.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We were able to complete paid volunteering work at a homeless charity which was very rewarding. We were supported by BDO at every step of the way. We had a fun training week in Birmingham and then in London at the end. The firm invests a lot of time and effort into its staff.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing - it's a great company to work for. There are many opportunities in several different departments which means that if you wanted, when ACA qualified, there are lots of chances to move between departments or even try out different departments for several months. There are plenty of opportunities to travel also.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • During the working week, there was no socialising but at the weekends, there was a national football tournament and a weekend away in Manchester. There was also lots of socials in Birmingham and London. I went out about 7 times during the 6 weeks! This was quite a lot considering how busy we were.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Manchester is cheap if you go to the right places. The cost of living is cheap if you stay out of the city centre and nights out are really reasonable but around the office, there is a big business district so it can get quite expensive sometimes. The student areas are cheaper.
