    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I didn't feel like my personal skills were utilised in this internship, department placements were a lottery and as one of the only tech interns with coding experience I was one of the only ones who's job involved no coding. A more tailored program would see better results imo.

    3/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I didn't sit at a desk cluster with my team, there was never a team lunch or effort to build connections with them. Because people work from home constantly and move desks daily, making connections was hard.

    2/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was always forthcoming offering help and I felt well supported.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The first few weeks I felt I had nothing to do, and the last few weeks a bit too much. It was hard to pace work because the work I was doing required a level of understanding of this workplace that could only come with time.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was left to my own devices. Other interns were given structured work daily and clear short term objectives which I would have preferred, but I'm sure some would enjoy being given a task and just being told 'go'. Again, I think a greater effort to place interns appropriately would have gone a long way.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Not at all. I want to go into software development and I was one of the only tech interns not to get the chance to work with code.

    1/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office is large and who comes in and sits where changes every day, some days you can't concentrate for the calls going on and others it's deadly silent.

    2/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The Early Careers team often made mistakes in instructions and documentation, things were often disorganised and details of events would change a hundred times over.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There were some sessions which would be useful if you continued at RBS but I'm not sure I would necessarily call them investments as they were just a conference call run at really no cost.

    2/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • For me, completely unappealing. The system is too much of a lottery and I think works for people who don't know what they want to do. If you have a passion it is not suitable at all, I don't want to be moved around all the time I want to develop an area of expertise.

    1/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • While there were some attempts to create a social atmosphere, if you were unfortunately placed not in Gogarburn with 90% of the interns then you're sort of doomed.

    1/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • More expensive than my term-time cost of living. The cost of food in my location is extortionate and we aren't afforded the luxury of a Tesco etc. such as on the main campus.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There is nothing in this area but bank offices and call centres.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I think there was one event out of work hours.
