The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement year at Lighthouse and I would definitely recommend it. The combination of a friendly atmosphere, interesting work, and the numerous perks, such as, lunch provided, free parking and social events throughout the year make waking up and coming to work in the morning very easy.
I have felt very valued by my colleagues since the beginning. Lighthouse make a big effort when you first join to ensure that everyone is integrated into the company. Since then I have made good personal and professional relationships with people who I can easily ask for help at work or hang out with outside of work.
There is definitely no shortage of support if you want it. For the duration of the placement I was assigned a supervisor who would schedule monthly check-ins where I would have an informal chat about how I was getting on, both personally and professionally. I didn’t have to wait until these meetings for guidance though, on a daily-basis I would ask people for help.
The amount of responsibility given to me was one of the main positives of working at Lighthouse. I became an integral member of the team almost straight after coming out of training. I was thrown onto a customer project and even went abroad to France to meet customers and visit a real site. Although I had a lot of responsibility, this was balanced by the fact I didn’t have to worry about making mistakes. There is a no-blame culture and there was always someone around to help you out.
The Company
The Office atmosphere is really relaxed at Lighthouse. Everyone are friends so there is a lot of joking around and laughing. You are never afraid to ask anyone a question because it is a very collaborative environment. The only downside is that you might hear lots of terrible jokes throughout the year.
Lighthouse invest a lot of time into their employees. When I first joined I undertook a 7-week training programme to get my technical skills up to speed. From then, when I joined the office I received plenty of 1-on-1 help from other engineers whenever I needed more help and training.
