    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The placement year was a great experience. I was granted large roles and responsibilities within my project teams and was challenged within my project work within introductions to new skills and engineering principles.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt a valued member of both my departmental team and my project teams, my thought and ideas were duly considered and taken into account during meetings and I was granted large roles and responsibilities during project work.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The structure of the placement student scheme at Cummins promotes a sense of growth and development, the guidance and training provided during the year well prepares you for project tasks ensuring you do not feel out of your depth. The support though is well managed, as you grow more confident and independent you are granted greater responsibilities within your project teams.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The quantity of work is well balanced, I did not feel over burdened and at the same time did not find my self searching for work. A good level of work is provided to keep you feeling productive while also granting you time to improve through any training opportunities.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The responsibilities I was granted during this year were considerable, I found myself confidently chairing meetings and presenting to people at all levels of the business. I was granted a real sense of purpose and felt that the work i was completing was making a difference.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • On reflection of the year it is undoubted that I have developed as an engineer, I have gained experience and competency in a wide array of engineering discipline and software that will continue to assists in my degree studies and beyond. I have also developed as a person, improving my social and transferable skills.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The working environment is a great place to work, the members of my departmental team work collaboratively and support each other in their project work.

  • The structure of the placement year was very organised, training, support and guidance were easily accessible and granted a sense of growth and development over the entire year.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I attended a considerable number of training course during this year and was granted opportunity to attend many more, I believe the investment in my personal development was considerable and also visible.

  • The opportunity to work with Cummins in the future is something I would like to consider, i have enjoyed the work that I have completed and believe there is a great atmosphere among the employees.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • there was a great social scene among the placement students, socializing was often both during and after work hours. The permanent employees also show great social interactions with the placement students, involving them in societies and clubs.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The prices are affordable and what you would expect within the area.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The area in which I lived and worked (Daventry) had little to no nightlife but the surrounding areas (Coventry, Leamington Spa, rugby) had very good nightlife.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes there are many activities outside of work to get involved in, many are linked to and supported via employees within Cummins.
