    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I did not enjoy this internship at all. I was left most of the time without much work to do and it was quite difficult to let my manager know as he was always in meetings. The internship was not structured properly and therefore was not enjoyable. The placement was extremely boring and not challenging.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I only spoke to one staff member regularly and the other staff members made me feel excluded and unwelcome. If it was not for one particular staff member I would have probably quit with the combination of home sickness. Many staff members were very patronizing and treated me like I was stupid.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I barely spoke to him and he was not very supportive at all. I would had a totally different experience with a more supportive manager. He did not spend time getting to know me so the work I was given was not challenging. I was told by several it takes x amount of time to do y. It felt very restrictive.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was extremely bored and not challenged. I was told how I can't do particular things. I finished my task within a few hours which was apparently meant to take me three months to complete. I had to keep myself occupied. I dreaded coming in to work as I knew I was going to be bored out of my mind.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was left alone to do the task set by my manager, so it depends what you call responsibility. In my opinion, I was given small tasks to ease the pressure of having an intern on my manager. For example to do research using Google on the railway essentially stuff I can do at home.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I did not develop new skills. I got more exposure to skills I have already honed in. I did not receive any training and the talks I did go to were designed for work experience children. I have learnt that Engineering as an industry is not for me due to the structure of Engineering companies in the UK and Worldwide.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was terrible and there was a lot of work place politics going on. I believe the office needs more team bonding as the dynamic of the office feels very fragmented. The office can be quite intimidating and lonely. The aesthetics of the building is awful, no air conditioning and extremely dirty carpet.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was not organised properly at all. My office did not I was starting until the week before even though I had secured the position five months prior. There was no induction or training about the company and interns are separated out so no networking among your peers. I heard nothing from Siemens HR for five months also.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Siemens did not invest in me at all. I believe the company has interns but has no intention of transferring the intern from the internship program to graduate scheme. I did not have a discussion with my manager about my goals even though I tried countless times. My manager did not know how my internship was structured which shows poor communication skills between departments.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Company Car

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Even if I was offered a graduate scheme I would decline the offer. I would not want to come back here. I believe Siemens would stagnate my development personally and professionally. I have already started applying for other roles during my internship. I do not know if the internship leads to graduate position anyways.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • What placement students?? I was told that I was the only intern in the office but I found out halfway through my internship that there was another intern on the floor above. I was not invited to the social event they had. A staff member A told staff member B and I was present that how I found out about it. Staff member B then grudgingly asked me if I wanted to come. I politely declined.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The area I worked was so cheap for food and clothing but the travel was extortionate. Socializing was cheap due to the employee discounts offered to us by Siemens. There is no much to do albeit. I did not have to pay rent so that bought the cost of living down considerably.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I am not a raver but I have heard the night life is good around here.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Nope.
