    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Co-workers were welcoming and helpful, which meant work began quickly. I felt like the work I was doing was productive and useful. The work was the right level of challenge for my level of knowledge, and I was able to work independently for much of the project, and help was readily available if needed.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Colleagues were welcoming and friendly, and the general office atmosphere was good. I was made to feel useful, and was not afraid to ask for help. When asked for help colleagues responded quickly and helpfully. I was also made part of work events quickly and felt welcome at those events.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Between my supervisor, manager and the induction videos I was well supported and settled in quickly. If any help with my work was needed there were several people I could go to, all of whom were helpful and readily available. I was given the right level of help so as to not feel like I was a burden also.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There is always enough work to be done, but the flexibility of the delivery times mean I never feel overwhelmed. Large projects were broken down so as to ensure achievable goals, and this made the work feel like it was progressing at a good pace. Any meetings and other additional work was efficient and did not waste time.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was fairly independent for much of my work, and felt that my judgment was trusted by co-workers. I was able to work independently for much of the project and was responsible for the outcome. I did have to run tests past another colleague due to the amount of hardware available but this was not a significant burden.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt a great deal about how offices function, how to interact with co-worker and other workplace skills. I also learnt a great deal about the theory of what I was doing, as I had minimal knowledge of the area I was working in before the placement. Overall the skill gained during the placement will help me in whichever field I choose to go into.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • People in the office were friendly and welcoming, I felt like a part of the office quickly and felt part of a team. There was no office politics of any kind, and everyone seemed to get along well. The office culture promoted a good work-life balance and help was readily available if needed.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Other than a slight mix-up as to start times that was caused by my error, not theirs, there was no issue in the setup of the placement. Login details and a computer were already prepared and the online induction system was quick and efficient. The whole induction process was smooth and helped me to settle in quickly.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was trained by staff on several pieces of software, along with being taught a decent amount of the theory behind what I was doing. The training went above and beyond what was necessary for me to complete my tasks and it felt like the company cared about me gaining knowledge as well as completing the work assigned to me.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • There is a system within the company for progression specifically to allow employees to direct their own career flight paths. This, combined with the opportunities for working internationally, make Siemens an attractive employer. I did not apply for a job at this moment because I still have 4 years of my degree course to complete, however I will be returning next summer.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I was put in touch with the other placement students with the company in a nearby office, however the social scene there was not amazing. This was not really an issue, as the social scene among my co-workers in the office was great, and I was invited to several trips to local bars and pubs.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Rent was reasonably cheap and food costs were low due to a nearby supermarket. Socializing was inexpensive, as Newcastle is a city known for inexpensive nights out and pub trips. local restaurants and takeaways were reasonably priced. Transport via the Metro system was good value and made travel to and from work much easier.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Newcastle consistently scores as one of the best cities in the country for nightlife, and for good reason. there is a surfeit of good clubs, and a larger variety than almost anywhere in the country outside of London. Unlike London however drink prices are reasonable and a reasonable night out is fairly cheap.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were some volunteer opportunities available, and there was a variety of non-work events on due to being close to a city center. This meant that there was always events on somewhere within a few minutes on the metro.

    3/5
