    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my summer scheme from start to finish. Everybody has been extremely welcoming, supportive, and approachable. I have found the work really diverse and enjoyable, which has caused the month to fly by! The company also has fantastic social values, and I have fathomed the extent of opportunity that Savills has to offer.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I have felt valued throughout. All colleagues have been very thankful and appreciative of the work I have assisted them with, and it was lovely to hear such wonderful feedback in my appraisal. It was rewarding and satisfying to know that I was competent with the work that people were sending my way.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was so lucky to have such a superb mentor, she was always helpful and I really learnt a lot from her. The rest of the staff were equally as helpful. The perfect equilibrium of being provided with support from supervisors, and having to use my own initiative, was amazing.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I enjoyed often having multiple tasks throughout the internship, I had to structure my day and ensure I managed time well to complete the various jobs that I had been designated. Furthermore, I had to consider my project and the associated tasks and responsibilities that it would entail. I was always busy, and the work was diverse which I found attractive.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I had responsibilities from the first morning! This was fantastic as I was happy to be contributing towards the business from day 1. I assisted many people that had a lot of work on their plate, and I was happy to receive gratitude for the work I had done. This made the internship thoroughly rewarding.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Prior to this internship I was hoping to be exposed to the numerous elements that make up rural property. Savills completely delivered, and I feel that I will commence my studies with a good baseline knowledge of rural property. The first hand exposure to the industry has given me a good flavour of which constituents interest me the most, and my masters degree at Reading will help me establish a deeper all-round knowledge. I am proud to have been selected by Savills because I know it requires a certain level of difficulty to be accepted for the competitive internships. Employers will recognise this and hopefully, the scheme will aid me in securing a job for Sept 2019. I would recommend the internship to anybody wishing to follow suit.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everybody worked in a professional and productive manner. The atmosphere was always relaxed, the team have a very good work ethic and spend most the time quietly working on their various projects. Periodically there would be tea breaks etc and I had many good chats with people, everyone has a good sense of humour here which makes for a fun working environment.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Evidently a lot of planning and organisation went into the summer scheme, as I thought it was done fantastically. I was always busy. I was provided with a good insight to the various sectors within rural, and I found that the summer project was a really great way to get me proactively talking to people and using my initiative. The webinars were also excellent for providing us with even more detail towards all elements of property. I wouldn't have learned this content from my internal office experience.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Every employee of Savills that I assisted invested both time and patience in me. I was conscious that everyone is always really busy, I therefore tried to carefully listen and understand concepts and processes so that I did not need to keep asking questions unnecessarily (where possible!) I appreciated everyone's time as collectively they all taught me so much.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would be over the moon to be a future Savills employee. There are two things that really stood out to me; Firstly, the endless possibilities with regards to location and diversity of work. Secondly, the mentoring, training and guidance when studying towards my APC's. Other smaller companies that I have done work experience for would certainly not be able to provide such impeccable APC education.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Savills is a clearly a highly social company. I picked an excellent month for my internship as in the first week the entire Southern division all went to Newbury races for a conference and day out. Similarly, in the final week we travelled to Portsmouth harbour for an additional day out. It is superb for meeting many interesting people working within the many different departments, it is also lovely to have a complete mix of ages.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • My family have always lived just outside Salisbury, I therefore am extremely familiar with its associated living costs etc. I have just moved back to Wiltshire from London after four years, Salisbury feels refreshingly cheap and much easier on the pocket!

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As above, I grew up here and I therefore know the city like the back of my hand. Admittedly I haven't been out to the clubs etc. in a long time whilst in London, however I know that it is relatively bustling on a Thursday and Saturday night. Many of my peers would admit that the nightlife is questionable but mainly because the locals drink too much and have a reputation for reckless behaviour! A good group of people will always make it fun though.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Savills organised two big days out for the Southern Regions; one in Newbury and one in Portsmouth. These were both highly social days out I tried to capitalise on meeting as many people as possible, it is such a great opportunity to do so. I have gathered that Savills also offer sporting opportunities in which I would be extremely keen to partake!
