The Role
I have found it a really great learning experience - having studied a non-relevant degree it has been a great way to start introducing me to how businesses operate, and it has shown me that this is the right path for me to go down once I graduate from university.
My in-charge was a great help throughout my internship and made me feel valued. I was going into the job with no experience in accounting, yet alone audit, so tasks had to be explained to me. However, all my colleagues were very supportive of me and assisting me in completing the tasks. They included me in socials and we always took lunch break together.

This varied from day to day. To start with, there was a lot of work for me to get on with, however, once the stats were all finished for Q1, then there was a 'dry patch' in work set for me. However, when there was no audit work to do, there was always online training.
I feel I was given a lot of responsibility, as the tasks I were given contributed towards the whole auditing of Ricoh, and work I completed was marked as prepared for it to be reviewed by the manager. This therefore, makes me feel like I was given a lot of responsibility.
Certainly I am now a lot more comfortable and confident in using Microsoft excel which is very important in my degree when I am carrying out data analysis. The shortcuts and new options that I have learnt will greatly assist me in my final year. The economic side will also be useful in my economic module next year as I have a greater knowledge of key terms e.g. tangible goods.
The Company
The Canary Wharf office in particular is a very sociable office that made me feel at home. I was introduced to several graduates and school leavers outside of my team and they all made me feel welcome and I was invited to socials with them. This made me feel that KPMG is the right company to be working with. It is also notable that the atmosphere in the clients office was also very good, as we could all get our work done, but equally have a chat when we had small breaks.
I feel the internship was well organised as I was assigned to a client and was able to experience what life would be like if I was offered a place on the graduate scheme. There have also been sociable organised for all the interns (one of which is tomorrow) which is a great way for all the interns to bond.
There was a lot of training that could be completed on the mylearning page of the KPMG website. I made great use out of this where I am now comfortable with what KPMG codes in terms of confidential work. Like previously stated, the excel training has also been extremely helpful and is going to aid me in my degree.
Company Parties/Events
KPMG feels like a great place to start off my career. The friendliness of the staff made me feel at home and this is a large appealing factor. The support they provide for the ACA qualifications assisting you with college time then further support if you fail an exam, makes this seems a very good prospect.
The Culture
There did seem to be a good social scene amongst my colleagues. They were frequently going out for a drink after work or just meeting up at lunch. I was introduced to other graduates and school leavers who also made time to ask me to go to drinks, in which I did go to my in-charges leaving drinks.
Obviously London is an expensive place to live and the socialising was more expensive than I am used to - although that is not hard because I go to university in Nottingham where alcohol prices are very cheap. However, it is what I was expecting so whilst expensive, was not a shock.
