    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall I enjoyed it. I learned a lot about the industry I graduated in and feel like I learned something new every day on the first couple of months. After a while, though, I felt like the work started to be a bit repetitive and there was nothing "new" to learn in the intern to-do list.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt quite valued in an every-day basis: everyone always said thank you after helping them with projects and overall listened to my suggestions and thoughts about how we could improve a translation / way of doing things.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My mentor has been amazing, always ready to help whenever I was struggling with something and prompt to give support and council if necessary. You can see they have had many interns during the years because everything was taught little by little so I didn't feel overwhelmed, and every "intern session" in which I was given additional workload photocopies with explanations were provided to help me keep track on things.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There were some very busy days, while other days there was nothing to do pretty much. After being here for some time, however, I have found that this is a constant for the agency in general, so not related to my internship.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The day to day task was essentially QAing files managed by the PM. This of course entails responsibility because this were to be the final version to be delivered to the client, but I the more I continued the internship the more I felt like I would have wanted to have more responsibilities like liaising with clients and having more projects of my own.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I started my internship after having finished university, so of course it didn't assist me in my degree studies in any way. Generally speaking, though, I feel I really know much more about translation industry than I did after graduating. I recommend this internship even if you want to be a freelancer after university, because it gives you insight on client expectations, working hours and competition. Myself, I have decided to stay at Language Connect, so

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The majority of the communication is on Skype or Microsoft teams, which makes the atmosphere in the office pretty quiet and focused. Otherwise everyone is really friendly and helpful.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship is very well organised: at the beginning you get a "to-do" list with everything you will learn to do during your stay at LC, and I also got a booklet (now online) in which you determine your expectations so you can confront them when you finish the experience.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As I said, I feel like in the first few months I learned quite a lot and quickly, but after a while the tasks became quite repetitive and I started to feel like I didn't have much new to learn anymore.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Financial Bonus

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • They are quite often looking for new people to join the company, including myself 3 people have become Project Executives from intern in the 6 months I have been here.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We went out for beers quite a lot, nothing organised by the company, just between ourselves. There are 8 interns in the company at all times so it's easy to make friends.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It's London, and the company is in the city centre, so it's quite expensive.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Again it's London and the agency is in the city center, so there is quite a lot of places to go to at all times.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • During the months I have been there, there has been only one team building activity (a pizza making night, which was of course fun). Since the majority of the interns come from outside the United Kingdom and potentially do not know anybody, it would be nice if they could be more involved in out of work activities.
