    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • Insight was very enjoyable. During the Business of Law week it was excellent beiing given so much time to not only immerse myself in the activities set to increase my understanding of the legal industry, but also being able to cooperate closely with the rest of the CMS academy students. I have now met and got to know people that I would really enjoy working with in the future

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • From the very beginning I have felt valued. From being financially supported to attend interviews and Open Days, to being paid for the vacation scheme. Having close conversations with staff asking our opinions on the scheme. Most significantly working in my department I have felt like the work I am being asked to do is actually contributing to the work of the firm. Everything goes towards a client and I am kept in the loop as to the progress of my contributions.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • Received a really good level of guidance. From the opportunities to ask questions during the first week, but most significantly having not only a supervisor but buddies during the internship weeks. This gave me an opportunity to have a dedicated person I can ask anything to and knew I could take on any task with their support if I needed it

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Having sat in the Tech and Media department I have been able to establish a much broader picture of not just the legal industry but specifically the TMIC industry. Studying IP and Media next year I will be studying with a much broader view of the law having experienced it in practice and facing clients.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • I really valued the innovative structure of the CMS Academy. No other scheme allows you to immerse yourself so deeply in the Business of Law/networking/client/sector focuses for a whole week without interruption. Then being able to operate so independently in the department without dipping out for Business of Law Activities has allowed me to totally immerse myself in the department, taking up and managing work on my own terms which has developed my management/commuication skills a lot.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • Atmosphere has been so co-operative. Really appreciated that we were told repeatedly that technically there is a place for everyone so that people do not feel they want to compete but rather work together and support their fellow students. During the itnernship I have shared work with other students and have been given work back too by others.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As mentioned previously really impressed with the support from the firm and the investment in our futures all the way from being supported to attend interview, up to being paid to complete the scheme and the dedicated buddy we have been offered to support us. Not matter what the result, TC offered or not, it has been an excellent opportunity that has been really worth my time.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • Very authentic insight. The way that I have been given so much independence in my department to find work ymself, manage my time and communciation. All work given to me has contributed to an overall project, published or sent to a client. Work passed to me is authentic work a trainee would carry out and has been the first time I have felt like I am actually working in a law firm.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • Having sat in the department amongst all levels and roles of staff I have been able to witness the collegiate, flexible, productive culture and become part of it myself. It is a team that I have thoroughly enjoyed working with and looked forward to going back to everyday. It is a culture that I would like to rejoin in the future.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • Having immersed myself in the Business of Law, developing my insight into the client and sector focus of CMS, worked alongside a friendly and cooperative team/culture and sat in the Tech and Media department I'm now certain that I want to not only train as a lawyer at CMS but also embark on a career here.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • As explained earlier I was supported to travel for the interview and a subsequent open day, offered accomodation though did not need to take it and on completion of the scheme will be reimbursed for my time here. Very helpful because without it I possibly would not have been able to take part in the scheme.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • During the Business of Law week I really appreciated the way that during the networking table event we were able to meet employees who were from all different roles in the firm, rather than just lawyers. I think it's really important to gain an understanding that CMS is a business that stretches beyond just legal advice and cannot work without all components/types of staff.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • Very enjoyable. We were given a range of opporunities to socialise and network with all difference types of staff and in a range of settings from formal dinners to more relaxed drinks. Perhaps I would suggest a few more opportunities to socialise where alcohol isn't supplied early in the scheme just so everyone feels included, such as those who don't drink and don't feel the need to leave early before those important connections are made between the students.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Witnessed in my department and have spoken with staff about a range of opportunities to get involved in work outside the legal environment, including pro bono/charity work but most significantly a range of sporting events which I would love to get involved in, from cycling trips to the CMS world cup being held in Vienna.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Yes- I have already passed on what a positive and valuable experience this has been to other law students at my university. CMS is really for everyone and the Academy is a scheme which is like no other in the industry. So much opportunity to develop but also gain an authentic insight into the work of a law firm.
