Engineer Review

Thoroughly enjoyed. Would highly recommend! I enjoyed the hands on aspect and also learning about manufacturing processes. The hours were great and there were plenty of overtime opportunities. Nissan treats their employees extremely well with constant recognition of good work. I will definitely apply for a graduate scheme in the future.

As soon as I started I was thrown in at the deep end as we had projects to install with little time available. I was therefore given a lot of responsibility from the get go. The fact that my colleague were constantly giving me jobs made me feel very highly valued.

My manager and supervisor would always be open if I was ever stuck on anything. Having my mentor sit and work beside me was very beneficial. We also had a workshop where we could speak to the supervisor regarding concerns about manufacture. Technicians were also available to lend a helping hand.

Varied. During shutdowns where the majority of work gets done you can expect to work 60 hour weeks or longer. On the average day I would say I always had enough work to get through the day. If not, there were always other team members around that would appreciate a helping hand.

As we were so tight with time with installing the project I worked on from start to finish, I was given lots of responsibility. I'm glad I was given so much, as I don't think I would have learnt as much as I have if not. But there was never too much that I felt pressured.

With my degree being in automotive engineering and this placement being suited to a mechanical engineering degree I have to be honest and say that a lot of my knowledge from university has not been used at NMUK. However, I have learnt things that I probably never will at university, and I prefer to broaden my horizons at this stage in life and not specialize in one particular thing.

Really positive. Everyone is friendly and always helpful. Colleagues often spoke across the desks and were interested in what I have been up to. Nights outs and team building exercises also helped brighten up the mood. The office at Nissan is a very chilled environment with a kitchen near by.

Very well organized. From the start the assessment center and interview ran very smoothly. After that the induction and training I received were very valuable. Throughout the year we had placement lunches and even a one to one review at the end of the year. I thought the placement was organized brilliantly.

There was always opportunities for training and development. Sadly I didn't make the most of these but I did go on a brilliant presentation skills course. Nissan do courses that will help you be a better engineer such as basic electrics for mechanical engineers, and also courses that will help you anywhere in life such as leadership.

Very appealing. Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK is continuously expanding and investing in the latest technologies so there will always be jobs available for engineers. Positive business plans and millions of sales worldwide mean Nissan will always be a strong global competitor in the automotive market. The Nissan Leaf is also at the top of its game in the electric vehicle market.

Being around Newcastle there was always a good social side of working at Nissan. I went out a couple of times with other placements and with work colleagues. I felt a valued member of the team being invited out on nights out, weddings and Christmas dos. They were all enjoyable.

The cost of living is very cheap up north. Expect to pay around £75 per week for a house in Gateshead or lower in areas of Sunderland, and up to £100 per week for a very nice modern house. If you find the right bar you'll be drinking £1 jager bombs and £2 trebles so you won't need much money for a night out.

The nightlife was excellent one of the best things about working here. You have Newcastle which in my opinion is the best night out in the UK. From Newcastle its only 2 hours to Edinburgh, an hour and a half to York and 15 minutes to Durham - plenty to chose from!

Yes lots of opportunities. I played 5 a side with work colleagues every Monday for a while. Recognition for good work also meant we were given go kart vouchers which was fun. You might want to get into golf though as everyone here seems to play it - might be a good way to socialize.
