    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement. Although at times I faced challenges and out of my depth, the experience really has been invaluable. I have been able to get involved in so many activities and learn how a global company works. As well as this I have experienced many work perks.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Throughout my placement I felt very valued by my colleagues, not once was I treated as 'an intern'. Instead, I was given the same amount of responsibility as many of the execs in my team. There was mutual respect between colleagues and an environment where people felt comfortable asking for guidance.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My managers were very supportive. I had weekly catch ups with my manager where i discussed any issues - good or bad. They were very approachable and always made time for me. Guidance was strong; if I needed additional help in a task or had questions surrounding the project then my managers were there to help.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was very busy on a daily basis. I don't think i ever didn't have anything to do, and instead it was a case of balancing the priority of jobs to make sure they were completed on time. If you are short of work, I would advise to tell your manager - there is nothing worse sat their with no tasks to complete.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a vast amount of responsibility on my placement. I had full responsibility of different brands and accounts, and I was accountable for all activities which happened. I never expected to have this much responsibility on my placement year but I believe having it has helped develop my skills.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • There was so many development opportunities throughout my placement. Unilever has a 'skills / development' calendar which sign up to. Courses include: finance for non finance, excel, negotiation etc. We were actively encouraged to sign up for these courses and I would strongly advise, if given the chance, to take advantage of these. I will take these back to uni with me.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere of the office was fantastic and was one of my most favourite parts about working at Unilever. Everyone is so encouraging and there is a really inclusive atmosphere where everyone celebrates everyone's successes. I had a fantastic team and the atmosphere was great in our team area - I will miss it lots!

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was well set up but there is definitely room for improvement. More clarity prior to joining the business would be beneficial, and receiving more information on your role. The scheme would have benefited from a mentor system also, there was a vast difference in the quality of work plans / opportunities in work plans.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, all of the placements students were lovely and we would regularly go out socialising together - this included pub quizzes, nights outs and day trips exploring. it was nice to have different groups of people which you could go out with. A lot of us lived near each other (Wimbledon / Clapham) which meant we could easily meet.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living was quite high due to the high rent costs. On top of the rent costs, the commute to Leatherhead each day was expensive. Socialising costs were what I expected. Overall, I made sure that I budgeted and that I was on top of my costs so I was never short at month end.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was opportunities to get involved out of work, such as meals etc. Having said this, due to the location of Leatherhead, there wasn't that much to do near and many people drive to work so couldn't go to the pub. In 100VE there is a much better after-work social scene.
