    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Hays, I was able to develop my soft skills, network and practical skills to help me further my career in marketing. During my placement I have had the opportunity to expand and develop current projects. Not only did I learn day to day activities that occur in marketing but also how strategies and longer plans developed.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • In the team I worked with I felt very valued. We all have our own expertise and I was able to bring new knowledge and ideas to the table in brainstorming and strategy meetings. I have been able to develop the skills I had when I started which means that my team trusts my judgement and will ask for advice and opinions on certain topics.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I have been given lots of support and guidance by my supervisors. Having regular contact and working closely with them means that I have been able to learn from their knowledge and have been supported in furthering reports. I have also been encouraged to pursue my interests during my placement and my supervisor has backed my wishes in taking on more responsibility in other divisions in the team.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • On a day to day basis I am fairly busy - though I have very rarely felt overwhelmed with my tasks and responsibilities. However, when this has been the case (if I recall correctly this has happened twice) my supervisor has been very supportive and helped me manage my time and priorities.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During my placement I have been given a fair amount of responsibility - I edit the Hays Worldwide podcasts and also create a lot of the graphics that are shared at group level. This has been where I have had the most responsibility as I feel confident in this area and have been previously trained on most of the software used. I am also involved in managing social accounts with other team members. In the team I worked with most of us have joint responsibility for projects and we share our knowledge. So we share our achievements and celebrate each others successes.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills that I have learnt will definitely assist me in my degree studies and further on, as I would like to pursue a career in marketing. I have been able to learn how to use multiple tools that I would not have had access to in my studies and this will help further on in my career. I have also been able to learn aspects and skills that my peers are currently learning in my study so I will be better placed when I also take these courses.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office I work in is friendly and open. We encourage each other professionally and it is not uncommon to hear conversations on exchanging ideas and people sharing knowledge on how they would go about a problem/task. There is also a reasonable amount of laughter in the office as the environment is relaxed yet professional.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I think that overall the placement was set up well for my needs. I have been able to make a role for myself in a team and I feel a sense of achievement with that. I have had regular catch-ups with my supervisor and team which has made me feel that my personal progress in my placement is important to my team as well as myself.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • In regards to my personal training and development, I feel that Hays has really invested in me. I have been able to attend PR networking and seminar events which I feel have been of interest and will help me further my career moving onwards. I have also been trained in all of the tools and software that my team uses which has been immensely helpful in terms of understanding what others in my team do.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would love to continue my employment here after I have finished my studies. The workplace culture really fits me and I feel that I have learnt a lot here. I also feel valued and that my skills are appreciated here. I feel that this is a great place to work.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I am the only placement student in the office I work in, but this has not been a hindrance in terms of the social side with my colleagues. As a team we go out to lunch to celebrate birthdays and achievements. We also typically go out for a drink on a Friday which has helped me bond with my colleagues.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I'm not really sure how much the cost of living in the area is like as I have been able to live back at home with my parents. The cost of socialising is reasonable - it is in London but I have never been shocked at how much something has been when I have been out.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There is a very good nightlife near where I work - a few times the office has gone to Soho which is a short walk away. I have enjoyed having this nightlife, and there is also a few restaurants nearby which stay lively throughout the evening. I am not sure how the nightlife is during the beginning of the week - as I normally go out from Thursday.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • As I didn't live too closely to the area I can only answer this based on what my colleagues do in the area. Some of them are involved in team sports and often participate in fun and exciting activities that are nearby. For our team parties we also do activities before going out and these have been diverse and interesting.
