    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My placement was an enjoyable experience due to being part of a large corporate business which produces a range of valued products. Also I developed many technical skills which will be very useful in the future. However, the year lacked a 'placement experience' as apart from the induction event at the start of the year, there were no 'intern' events and we all worked very far apart, in terms of geography and work. As well, I believe there was a lack of investment in employees for such a large organisation.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I am confident that my work made an impact and people relied on my output. However customers did not always appreciate the amount of effort that went into my work.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • This varied throughout the year. It started off slow, and I had to do a large amount of self learning. However as I reached out for support I received more. It would have been beneficial to receive more structured learning at the begging of the placement. It is important to note that the amount of support and guidance you receive is very much line manager and team dependant.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My workload varied day-to-day; week-to-week due to the type of work my team does. Some times I would work late to finish requests, other times I would be able to leave earlier. This again is team dependant. I got busier and busier throughout the year as my capabilities grew. Although the work load was occasionally a lot, it was satisfying to have and do so much work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility during my placement. I was treated as if I was a real employee rather than a placement student. If you want to be put into the deep end then Unilever is for you! Although it can be a struggle at times, it was a good experience as it teaches you to be independent and learn.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I am confident that the skills I learnt will help me moving forward, both at University and in later life. I have developed some core as well as niche skills that I will be able to apply in a range of situations. Without this placement I may have never been given the opportunity to learn these skills.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • My office was one of the quieter and smaller offices (although still big as offices go!). Everyone was friendly and happy to help if you asked them.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I found out my location and role two weeks before my placement began (you apply for a function rather than a role), which meant I had a short time to relocate. I was not contacted by my team/ line manager before I started so did not know what to expect and was not able to prep. The integration into the team was good, however there was a lack of an intern community. When I wanted to give feedback, there was no clear channel for communicating this.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • My team would always invent time in my development when I requested it.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Due to being such a large organisation, Unilever is full of opportunities, hence why people work there for such long lengths of time. You are able to change roles and functions to find what suits you while remaining within the same organisation. If you are willing to work hard, you are able to progress through promotion up the work levels. I understand that the experience of being an employee at Unilever has changed during over the past 10 years, however I believe it is still a good place to work.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Apart from the induction event, there were no placement events or budgets. The only interaction we had was when you saw people in the office, or if you organised to see people.

    1/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It was outer London, so it was more expensive than my University and home town. However as I was earning I was able to have a combatable year in terms of costs and living.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Where I lived had endless cafe's, pubs and restaurants which was fantastic. The office is located next to the river. Nightlife was not so great locally but it was easy to travel into London.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The area has many clubs and activities on offer which I made the most of.
