    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed the less technical parts, but am glad I did it as it is such a good experience and it has increased my employability a lot. I enjoyed the challenge of the technical tasks, but I preferred leading projects and coordinating work. It's given me and insight into what I want to do in the future.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • All colleagues made me feel very values, as they gave me important work to do that was vital for our team within Lloyds Banking Group. Also, nobody gave me jobs that weren't important and every task I was asked to do brought value to the team and I felt like I was a useful member of the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had a lot of support from my line manager. He gave me support with my personal life and wellbeing as well as with the work I was struggling with. He showed a lot of interest in my personal development and helped me find opportunities to improve my personal development.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Most days I had a good amount of work to do in order to fill my day. On some days, I was very busy and had to really get my head down in order to hit deadlines. On other days, where work had just been given in, I had the chance to catch up on the softer tasks and emails.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility. I had to do work which was vital to the company and was essential to get done by certain deadlines. I also had the responsibility of coordinating a project which is a role usually done by a manager. I also had other jobs such as stationery rep and being in charge of the tea kitty.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt lots of technical skills which will be very useful in some modules in my final year of Uni. Also, I learnt transferrable skills such as working with others, communication and leadership. These skills will help me progress in my studies and also be more employable in my future careers.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very friendly. Everyone always asked how I was and how was finding my placement year. Everyone always offered help and all colleagues in my office were approachable. I felt like everyone was interested in my wellbeing and always offered to have a chat if needed or offered help on work I was struggling wit.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The introduction weeks weren't great, I think the training could have been better and more background information could be given on the team and everyone's roles/work within the team. After the introduction however, we were treated as permanent colleagues and no organisation was really needed. I think it could be shortened to 10 months with the option of staying for 12?

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • My line manager was extremely interested in my personal development and always encouraged me to work on it by helping with my development plan, find opportunities to improve my personal development and offer support for what to improve. Everyone else in the team was also encouraging me to use time to develop my professional skills and offered help to do so.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would consider working for LBG in the future, but maybe not in this specific team since it's such a technical role. I prefer coordinating and leading projects which LBG have many roles involving this so these particular roles are very appealing as there's lots of opportunity to move around the teams and progress upwards through roles.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes - IPs occasionally held socials together, but more often it was a mixture of all colleagues in the office. I was encouraged to attend these social events but not forced which I was pleased of. Everyone was welcoming and tried to organise socials that everyone would be interested in.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cardiff is great to live as a student. It's really affordable in terms of paying rent if you live in Cathays or Roath (never lived anywhere else in Cardiff) as these are the students areas. Having food out and socialising is also reasonable and not too expensive - depending on where you choose to go. But you can definitely live in Cardiff on a budget.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Cardiff is great for a night out, whether you like a quiet meal in a nice restaurant, a drink in a sophisticated bar or a lively night out in the best clubs - Cardiff has it all. Head to Live Lounge for a cheap nigh out or to GLAM for a less messy night.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes - because you have after work and the whole weekend off to not do any work you can do whatever you want. Cardiff always has something going on and you'll never be bored. The sports and social emails also help you find activities and events around the city.
