    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Thoroughly enjoyed it! I loved the company and the way they treated their placement students, I felt like a full time employee and was treated as if I was an analyst. This was great to gain experience of what the working world was like and prepare me for after university.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were always very thankful for any work I completed and always keen to help my personal development. The mentor system was great and meant I always had someone to go to if needed. Feedback was encouraged and this was key in knowing what to improve and where your strengths lie.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support was offered throughout my placement not only from my immediate team but from Lloyd’s as a company. The one to one meetings were great to make sure I kept my manager up to date on what I was working on and let them know of any worries or issues I had.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was very busy for most of my placement but this was great as I felt honoured I was being trusted to complete all this work. However they didn’t expect me to work overtime and were always very supportive of the agile work method. As long as I got my work done I could leave.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was lucky to be very involved with the senior management colleagues in my team. This gave me great exposure and allowed me a lot of chance for leadership. Additionally I was given the lead role in many projects by my managers, which was great in my development and confidence.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Learning how to code in SAS EG will be invaluable to my future, although I don’t see a future in coding being able to do this will look great on my CV and open a lot of doors. The day to day skills you learn throughout a placement will help me not only in my studies at university but in future life.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was always a great atmosphere in the office with lots of social events organised. The great team spirit helped keep morale high and work fun and interesting. Sometimes it was bit too loud in the office but there was meeting rooms and breakout areas to go too if you wanted some quiet space.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was quite well organised but as we were contracted by Pontoon to Lloyd’s this was quite confusing as I was getting emails from both companies at the start and it wasn’t made clear we were contractors at the start. additionally the graduate scheme took far too long to organise and it was only until my final week we got the details which was too late.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company were great in my personal development: we had performance reviews every quarter in which feedback was given after each so you knew how to move forward and progress. Also personal development was taken very seriously and I was lucky that my line manager was exceptional at helping to set goals and develop me throughout my placement.

  • Flexi Time

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing - especially the fact you can be referred to any graduate scheme with Lloyd’s not just the risk one. I have my interview next week so will see if I get offered the job then, but it is very competitive and only 20% of current placement students get offered a grad job.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a great placement student atmosphere in the company. We were added to a Facebook group beforehand so we could arrange housing which was great and get to know each other. Lots of interaction at the start then throughout the year many drinks and socials were organised by placement students.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Very expensive but this was always going to be the case working in London. Paying for rent and socialising with the salary offered was quite difficult and took a lot of budgeting but doable. Socialising is quite hard as everything is expensive and if you want to go somewhere cheap the cost of getting there makes it expensive.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife was great. There were so many diffeeent options for going out- whether this just be for drinks or out to a club. A lot of bars also offered happy hour after work which was great, and there were so many different options they were always busy. Would highly recommend.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • So many opportunities. The working hours at Lloyd’s were great that you weren’t expected to stay ridiculously late so you could join sports clubs in evening. I joined Rowing Club in Putney and work were very understanding of the training hours. There is so many different things to do in London it’s great.
