    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Medimmune is a great place to work. They cater a lot to their placement (and other) students giving them a lot of opportunity to learn and discover more about industry. Their are a diverse amount of opportunities within the bioinformatics department. This means it is perfect for any level of student who wants to gain some experience in the field of bioinformatics..

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone i have engaged with at medimmune has been genuinly interested in my work and have taken my ideas and opinions seriously. Within Bioinformatics, everyone is open, friendly and very experienced. This means it is perfect for anyone who has a geniune interest in bioinformatic sand wants to learn more.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Manager was very flexible in terms of support. I was asked at the start of my placement what my goals were and what level of supervision I wanted. They catered to my needs perfectly.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was very busy on most days. However there were patches of time where the work load would diminish and you could catch your breath.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was put on high priority projects which would have a company wide impact. I was very happy with the trust that they given their students.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I started at Medimmune with a very limited knowledge in bioinformatics (only from modules which I took from university). However, now that I have completed my placement I feel that I have a much broader knowledge and I have developed key skills for my area. The skills I have developed were key to me getting into a postgraduate course at one of the UK's top universities.

  • The office was very professional but with a friendly atmosphere.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was very well organised with milestones being identified at the start of the placement which kept me grounded and allowed me to keep track of my development.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Medimmune offer multiple training courses, talks, town halls, conferences and science fairs throughout the year. None of these are forced onto the students so it is up to them which they want to attend and how often they want to attend them.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • This seems completely dependent on time and good fortune. The company however is very serious in wanting to retain top talent. I have met multiple professionals who were Medimmune placement students.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • AstraZeneca have a social club called AZinspire who host professional and social events for students and young professionals. All the placement students are very social with one another with many even sharing homes.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cambridge is a expensive city mainly due to the high rent. Pubs and Clubs can also be expensive with drink prices being similar to London.

  • As a city built around its student community has a great number of student friendly clubs.
