    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Initially the work seemed slow, but on reflection, I believer this was due to the team trying to better understand my capabilities as an intern. After you prove yourself, your team is really encouraging for you to take on a bigger role. This is incredibly motivating as you can see the work you are doing has a direct impact on business activity.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I think you are always conscious that you are an intern, but due to the young nature of the company, you are accepted from day 1. If you can prove yourself capable, all of your team will be motivated to give you more challenging work. This again motivates you to work harder and keep busy with new projects.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Relationships are really important at L'Oreal and I had a great one with my own manager. I have maintained contact with him since I have left and feel that this was due to the strong relationship at work. The senior leadership team take an interest in providing support to interns and graduates and there is guidance available from a variety of sources within your wider team.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • You always have work to do, but everyone is conscious that you shouldn't be worn into the ground. I think that this is also dependent in the area you are working in. I had periods of very high activity, but I also had periods where I wasn't as busy. The business itself definitely has peak periods which impact your workload.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I felt that I was given a lot of responsibility. I was given the opportunity to take on lead roles in significant business projects and was trusted to perform in front of the senior leadership team. This motivated me to take on more challenging projects, but enabled me to focus my own work on quality.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Time management is SO important. I learnt the importance of planning, feedback and working in a larger team in the corporate environment. All of these things will aid my performance when I return to University and I hope to ensure that the grades I achieve will be a reflection of this work ethic. I would encourage all University students to undertake an internship during their time at University.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very bubbly and diverse. Being a french company, there is a definitely to a British corporate culture in my own opinion. However, I personally preferred it and felt that it was one that respected good ideas rather than a detailed structure of hierarchies. Being a young office, the company definitely encourages innovation.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Even before you start the internship, you are informed about a variety of activities to help you better understand the corporate culture. Once you start, you have a defined HR contact and the whole scheme has a focus on your development and how you can get the most out of your own internship. For me, this was a very unique experience.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • For me, L'Oreal pushes you to develop yourself. There are lots of optional training sessions and online tools that you can get involved with. Overall though, I think L'Oreal wants you to push yourself in your own work to make sure that you are developing in accordance with what your team would like you to achieve.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • For me, L'Oreal helped me define what career I am interested in and want to work in. The graduate schemes are directly linked to the internships and I would estimate that 50% of all graduates have worked in internships during their time at the company. For me, I would love to start my post graduate career at the firm.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • This is one of my best experiences at L'Oreal. I made life long friends who I speak to, years after finishing. There is a real focus on internal community within the interns with lots of nights outs, meals and social activities organised. I lived with other L'Oreal interns, something I would recommend. It means you have a hub of friends before you have even started.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Its London. Above that, its West London. Long gone are the days of University £1 pints. All you have to remember is that no one likes paying the money so you just have to lump it. Rent is high, but i would advise living somewhere close to the office (walking distance) so you avoid the cost of the tube everyday. It is expensive, but manageable if you plan your finances.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Close to Central London so there is always something going on. i was personally not that fussed about living in the capital before doing this internship. Now I cant imagine living anywhere else. Whether you are interested in going out or just chilling in Hammersmith, there is always something going on.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • there were several team events organised including the annual corporate social responsibility day. This is something that opens up your perspective on the corporate goals of the company. There is a lot of social activities, in my own experience these were football, karaoke nights, Christmas party and the monthly brands drink events.
