    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed the insight in to the energy industry and the nature of the work, particularly in a department where there's been a lot of change and where the business is looking to grow and focus on in the future.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I think it depended on the nature of the work I completed. I felt more valued after completing more difficult tasks. However colleagues do always make an effort to show appreciation.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager has been really supportive throughout my placement. I've been able to ask for advice when necessary whilst we had a mutual understanding of my responsibilities. They were also great at supporting my personal development.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The work intensity varied throughout the year. There were short periods where I didn't feel like I had enough work on to keep me going, however as the year progressed I worked out how I could add value without being explicitly delegated work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given as much responsibility as I was expected to be given in an undergrad role. However I feel like I could have taken on significant work with more responsibility more regularly. This year has made me want a role with more responsibility.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This year has given me real experience to relate my degree studies to. This has made my studies far more applicable. Furthermore my year in industry has given me a clear path of what I want to do after uni and how to develop myself further.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone gets on, the people are friendly and there's an appropriate amount of social chat. The people here take what we do seriously so it can often be quite quiet in the office. However this depends on your team and business area as it varies.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Some aspects weren't well organised, for example I could have got more out of the induction day. Also there wasn't always a set out pipeline of work for me to complete, which left me with short periods with little work to complete. Neither of these were bad to the extent that they negatively impacted my overall experience.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There are some great opportunities within E.ON to learn more about the rest of the business. People are happy to offer insights in to different areas of the business through meetings and site visits. There's a real culture of personal development for undergrads, however it's down to you to make the most of those opportunities by networking.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The graduate scheme offers some exciting opportunities to gain experience in the new energy world with a business aiming to lead the market. The business has international opportunities and they have great employment benefits. Future employment with E.ON is very appealing, although I didn't get a place on the graduate scheme they would still like me to apply for a direct entry role after uni.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social scene could have been better. There was a core group of grads and undergrads who had lunch together and occasionally organised stuff together outside of work. However it was difficult to do regularly because we didn't live near each other. We managed 2 nights out as an undergrad cohort (with people located across the country), and a Christmas night out and leaving meal for myself as a team.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cheap, but I haven't particularly enjoyed the city I've lived in (Coventry).

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Pretty poor. Coventry isn't the most exciting city, however Leamington Spa and Birmingham are easy to get to if you want something better.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • A few. I joined the work 7 a-side football group which was a good way to get to know other people around the office.
