The Role
This was a great internship opportunity and it certainly helped me understand the linguistics industry to a great extent. While it was great getting to learn the different roles that make the company work, I also had the chance to explore what might and might not work for me in my future career.
Entering into the new team was quite interesting. While it was nice getting to meet and work with new people, it was also quite hard adjusting to the team. Coming from college I had only ever worked with people my age and in my class but working in this new team setting was interesting and a good learning experience.
My supervisor was very very helpful. She was always there for guidance and support when I needed it and I was lucky to be placed with her. When I didn't understand something, she made sure I felt comfortable asking her for help and would always respond in a respectful and understanding manner.
There were some days that I was definitely quite busy but I never felt overwhelmed or stressed. I was able to complete my tasks as well as alleviate the tasks of my supervisor. On days I was not too busy I was able to complete tasks such as recruiting new linguists and other administrative tasks.
I felt like I was given the right amount of responsibility for my status in the company. And this definitely moved up as I got further and further into my internship. I was able to take on more tasks with multiple markets, while having designated clients that I took on and assisted with their projects specifically.
Although I did not study Linguists or Languages in college, I was able to gain very important skills that are crucial for any business majors. Client facing, communication, and managing projects are just three of the many skills this internship provided me with. I like how well-rounded the program is in equipping the intern with multi-faceted skills for any career path.
The Company
The general atmosphere was welcoming, sometimes freezing, and open. There was always music playing which helped with concentration. Also, there were no barriers or blockages which helped with open communication and encouraged collaborative problem solving. At times it was quite as everyone was focused on their work but other times there were interesting conversations.
The organization of the internship set up was stellar. From the beginning of the internship, I was introduced to the program in a seamless manner. It was quite an awesome experience being mentored by an experienced intern turned project executive as well. All through I was given different goals to reach and tasks to complete which made me stay in line.
In terms of personal training and development, I believe that the company invested in me but I certainly had to work toward what I wanted myself. I was taught and developed strong communication and client-facing skills, team work and time management, and project management in general. I was given all the tools I needed to succeed in the internship.
Working from home
I believe that they are an organisation that are certainly growing and willing to retain the talent that they recruit at the stage of the internship. I believe that I would have been asked to stay if I had expressed an interest in continuing with the organization, but unfortunately my career path isn't entirely in line with the industry.
The Culture
I believe that there was indeed a good social scene among all the fellow placement students and colleagues. I was the only intern working but the colleagues all got along perfectly and even as we continued to add on more employees, each came and easily adjusted to the team and corporate culture.
Well to be honest the cost of living and socializing in the area I worked in was quite high. Living in a large city although had it's perks, was also difficult because if I wanted to get lunch or something was hard. Having to socialize in a new place was also quite interesting.
Night life in the area I worked was awesome...if I had gotten to experience it. I was 19 when I entered the internship, which made me underage and unable to enter any clubs or parties. That being said I did find other alternatives to enjoy my night after work: namely joining a fitness club.
As previously mentioned, Night life in the area I worked was awesome...if I had gotten to experience it. I was too young to enter clubs or parties. The good thing is that I did find other alternatives to enjoy my night after work: namely joining a fitness club. I also joined a church community and visited the library multiple times.
