    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • This work placement has given me a good insight into the development of software in the engineering sector. The working environment here is exceptionally welcoming and relaxed. I was given some challenging engineering work to do throughout my placement however there were times when the work was less challenged and a little repetitive.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Within the team i work in i felt very valued, however i felt less valued by other teams.

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My managers and supervisors were very good at listening to my concerns and suggestions.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I would always have work to do, and if you manage to finish the work given to you there is an abundance of C# work to do (API test, verification ect...) The reason for 6/10 and not higher is due to the number of blockers i face when trying to complete a tasks.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given two very high importance tasks to do throughout my placement, both of these have to be done on a weekly basis. One was to track the overall performance of the software for each build and the other was to make sure numerical results of the software didn't change with changes to the code (unless they are suppose to change the result).

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I was given the opportunity to learn some c# over this placement, however the role i was given doesn't require me to learn much coding (other intern roles are almost 100% coding based). I have only written one program in the 12 months of being here. I was given opportunities to learn more about fluid dynamics components through various bug fixes.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office environment is superb, very relaxed and welcoming. I would have liked for there to have been a better social aspect between teams.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The initial handover period was managed well, we had a total of 6 weeks training until we had to take over the role by ourselves. There was a little mess up with our laptops not being set up at the beginning but this wasn't a huge problem. After this period i would have weekly meetings with my line manager and monthly meetings with my manager. In these meetings we discussed various placement issues.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Throughout the placement i was given the opportunity to learn C# (but not many opportunities to practice). We also had several full day training's that covered soft skills and personal management.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Healthcare from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Now that the company is a part of Siemens the company prospects after graduating are much better. Two slightly older interns now work here full time.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • In the office the social scene was friendly and welcoming, but the social scene outside of the office was very minimal considering there are 4 other interns here.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I'm not the best review to look at for this as i lived with my parents, but in general Milton Keyens is a cheapish area.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The one time we went out there were a few bars and clubs to go to in the center.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • It depends on what you want to do. In terms of being active there are loads of things to get involved with (snowboarding, indoor sky diving, rock climbing, wake boarding, ect..)

    4/5
