    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I found the vacation scheme at Shearman & Sterling to be a really outstanding experience - a great balance of valuable networking events, engaging work and social opportunities to bond with the other interns. The firm invested a great deal into our personal development and this vacation scheme was a fantastic learning opportunity. Overall, a very enjoyable experience!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I was made to feel very well valued throughout my time spent at Shearman & Sterling. I was warmly welcomed into the firm, with my team going out of their way to make me feel like a valued and respected member of the team. My team provided me with interesting work and I had the opportunity to work with senior partners during my time on the vacation scheme.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • I always felt well supported during my time at Shearman and Sterling, with plenty of support and guidance on this vacation scheme. The Graduate Recruitment Team was very supportive and we were provided with both a trainee buddy and a supervisor. There was also a great deal of career guidance on this scheme, which I found to be particularly beneficial.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills and knowledge that I developed at Shearman and Sterling will absolutely benefit me in my future. The skills that I developed during this time will be particularly beneficial for pursuing a career in law and I feel more confident in applying for future opportunities. Additionally, the knowledge I developed will help me with my degree.

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The vacation scheme at Shearman and Sterling was very well structured and organised, with the firm ensuring that we always had something to be doing. The activities and work were aimed at our development and were tailored to our needs as law students. I was always busy and this meant the days flew by!

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • Throughout my time at Shearman and Sterling, there was a really fantastic general atmosphere! Staff could not have been friendlier and instantly made us feel at ease. Undertaking a vacation scheme at a large international law firm is a daunting experience, but the friendly atmosphere helped to calm any nerves.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • It was very evident just how much Sherman and Sterling invested in our personal development and training. On the second day, I was given an I.T training session, which was very useful. Furthermore, my trainee buddy and supervisor were very much invested in my personal development, providing support, advice and career mentoring.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • The vacation scheme provided a great insight into what it would be like to have a full-time role at Shearman and Sterling. We had the opportunity to speak with trainee associates and they were very open about their experiences at the firm. Furthermore, having the opportunity to work on live projects gave me a good understanding of the typical work I could be completing if I had a full-time role there.

  • This vacation scheme was very beneficial for understanding more about the culture at Shearman and Sterling. As trainees, associates and partners were so open about their experiences, it was easy to gain an understating of the culture at the firm.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • I found the content of the vacation scheme very beneficial to me as it confirmed that I want to pursue a career within the legal sphere, moreover at an international commercial firm. Having the opportunity to work on live projects, I was able to determine whether my skills were suited to the work that trainees do and I am excited to pursue a career within law.

  • I was adequately paid for my time spent at Shearman and Sterling.


  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • There were plenty of opportunities for networking whilst on this vacation scheme. We had the opportunity to speak with employees across different practice groups, gaining a better understanding of the different work they do. Furthermore, we had the exciting opportunity to network with senior partners and associates at Shearman and Sterling.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • I found the social and networking opportunities on the vacation scheme to be really enjoyable and valuable events. At all of the events, the firm ensured that attendance from employees was high and all staff were very engaged. On one evening, we had a fantastic dinner at the Duck and Waffle restaurant, which proved to be a really standout experience.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Yes, I had the opportunity to find out about the various activities that employees can get involved in outside of work. This includes softball and five-a-side football teams.

  • I would absolutely recommend this vacation scheme programme to any friends considering a career in law!
