    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall I enjoyed my placement a lot. I have worked on very interesting projects as well meeting some great people. You get a lot of flexibility on what you want to work on and I was lucky enough to land myself some good work. There is obviously days that arent as good as others but overall I enjoyed it.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My team were unreal. Maybe its because we were quite small and had 3 members who were mid 20s but the team were awesome. Tea breaks were always a laugh and management were easy to talk to and get along with. There was no 'you have to do this because your the intern.' Especially after 3 or 4 months your input is valued.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I couldnt ask for more on guidance and assistance. I was lucky that my team came into the office so there was always someone there to answer my questions when I needed them. The beginning is hard, no doubt about it. You go from uni to working which is hard anyway so its vital to have a good team.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I would say we had the perfect balance. I saw we as there is 2 interns in my department. We had our daily roles which if we only did those we would be very bored and no busy at all. We went and got jobs for ourselves and split the responsibility.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I definitely wasnt running the show. However I was given responsibility. Reports I ran were going up into the Gods of IBM and decisions I made did hold importance. Dont get me wrong, nothing I did was going to ruin the company. I think that is actually quite important for an intern to remember that they wont give you anything that will ruin the company.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Soft skills will definitely come in handy. Excel skills will as well. My degree is in Economics and my job was in Procurement so they dont overlap a lot. However I would say I will take a lot away from this year and will use as much as I can. I have definitely matured as a person.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was good. It was always changing as people came in and out constantly. Sometimes it would very loud and sometimes very quiet. If its sunny and the summer expect it to be quiet, if its raining and the winter then expect everyone to be in. Also if someone important is there then everyone turns up.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • From IBM it was very good. From my University it was awful. They didnt care one bit and the irony is im paying them whereas IBM are paying me. IBM side of things are good. The EPM is a great idea and you can go to them with any issues that you may have.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • A lot. At IBM the education is second to none. They paid for me to go on trips and courses to London and gave me time to study if I wanted to. I have learnt about Blockchain and agile just when Im in the office. So yes a lot.

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • As its a massive corporation it is not as easy as you walk into a job but they have helped me and assisted me in thinking about what I want to do when I leave.
