About You
I loved the people and the culture and the whole experience was very enjoyable. The work shadowing was very useful to gain an oversight of the whole firm and the possible roles for me there in future. Additionally, the networking opportunities were invaluable and the skills sessions that were run were invaluable.
Everyone was extremely friendly and they were always happy to help no matter their rank and role. There was a lot of emphasis on the fact that we are the future of the firm, and as such they need to make as good an impression on us we do on them.
Support was amazing. Any time you had a question you could ask it and it would be answered respectfully without a doubt no matter what it was or how stupid it appeared to be. The attitude was very much geared towards there are no stupid questions and that everyone would love to help.
The week helped developed some useful skills but it was much more designed to inform us about the firm than to develop our skillset. Having said that, the group project and networking sessions were very useful for developing our skills in these areas which will be very helpful in future.
The Company
Very well structured everyone almost always knew exactly what was happening and if they didn’t, it was easy to ask someone for some assistance. We were given a timetable at the beginning of the week which we followed fairly religiously. The only time it wasn't quite structure was when we, the interns, were asking too many questions so we were late. But this was not the fault of the structure.
The atmosphere was in my opinion the perfect balance between serious and fun. Everybody there clearly cared deeply about their work and were very passionate about producing the best solution so there was this sense of great focus. However, it wasn't all concentration and focus. There was also a significant social aspect whereby the working day was very flexible so people could go for a coffee during the day if they so wished.
The firm definitely appeared to have put a large amount of time and effort into making the week as useful and fun as possible for the interns. They also had several sessions dedicated for personal development such as networking skills sessions, pen and paper programming sessions and others. Personally however, these skills development sessions were not too useful for me as I have had similar sessions previously, but I know that for others, the sessions were extremely worthwhile.
The insight was very useful in this respect particularly during the work shadowing, because we got to watch what a typical day is for a whole range of roles and as such, had a very rounded view of what most full time roles would involve and what it would be like to have one of these roles at Morgan Stanley.
The insight was really useful to evaluate company culture in particular the work shadowing and networking. This was the most useful part because it allowed us to chat to employees of the company so they could explain what their experience with the company is and what exactly the culture is like from their point of view. We also go too meet many people with the networking and also were shown the other aspects of the firm as well as the work place, which really highlighted the culture there.
The content of the week was very useful in deciding my future career path. Firstly, there was quite a few sessions dedicated to explaining what it's like working in the tech division of an investment bank and would be very useful to decide if this is the sector for you. Additionally, as mentioned previously, the week was really helpful to see what the culture is like, and what a full-time role is like and thus it is very valuable to see whether a role here is ideal for you in future.
Everything Else
For those who were commuting from London, all travel expenses to and from the firm were reimbursed and for those who were from further away, both travel expenses and a hotel was provided. Additionally, we were provided at least one meal per day for the entire duration, including free breakfast and lunches on a few occasions as well as some canteen credit for us to purchase food for the other days.
We had three official networking sessions as well as a networking skills session and all of the work shadowing which could be used for this purpose.
The opportunities for networking were extremely useful. We also had a networking skills session which was not particularly useful for me, but I know some of the other interns found that session useful. The official networking opportunities were the highlights for me, it was great to be able to pick the brains of people from all over the company including the Directors.
Yes, some of the employees spoke with us about what opportunities exist for clubs etc. I wasn't too interested in these kinds of activities so I didn't do much of my own investigation in this space so I can't say much more on this.
I absolutely loved this internship and it has been extremely useful for me and has resulted in a summer internship place for me.
