About You
I really enjoyed the Insights work experience programme at Imperial College London, as it gave me a better understanding of what it's like to study physics at a world renowned university. The staff who were looking after us for the week were very friendly and helpful, and made us feel at home.
For me the most important aspect was getting to know more about studying physics at such a prestigious university. I was able to understand more about what the course involves, and familiarise with the facilities available for the students. All the days were pretty much 9 to 5, so it gave a real student feel.
The staff were absolutely fantastic right from the beginning. They always made sure we were clear about all the information, given to us as well as ensuring we were never left out in discussions. they always made every effort to include us in as much as possible which made us feel great.
I believe i learnt a lot of transferable skills during my time on this placement. By interacting and working with new people, I was able to develop my confidence as well my team working skills, which was great. Various tasks we had to do tested other skills like leadership and presentation.
The Company
It was structured really well, the staff were really organised and had a plan which was to make sure we had the best opportunity to learn more about physics and how it done at Imperial. This definitely put me in abetter position about being a student there as I knew what to expect.
The atmsophere was really amazing, the staff made every effort to make sure we were given really good exposure to the physics department and allowing us to have a great feel about what its like to study there. Meeting new people who are in a similar position to me was also great, made a lot of friends.
The Insights Work Experience Programme has been an incredible opportunity to study at a world class university for a week-it has exceeded my expectations. The staffs were not too formal and so made everybody more relaxed and we enjoyed the week more. It has been a really fantastic experience for me.
The Insights Work Experience programme is designed to provide current year 12 students with a true understanding of the Physics Department, how it functions, and what it would be like to study physics at Imperial College London. It promises to be exciting and action packed, with successful applicants joining us here for one week in July 2018. Each day will begin promptly at 10am and end at 4:30pm.
A key aspect of your week here will involve meeting with a variety of academic staff members from one of ten research groups in the Department. Using information that you have gleaned from them (about what they and their group are working on), you will design a conference-style poster that displays their work.
The insights work experience programme has been extremely useful to me to help decide my career path. The programme allowed to me get a better view of what studying physics would be like and what it did was to confirm my interest. I knew for sure that this is what i wanted to do.
Everything Else
For me the money i spent on travel and food, was something i was happy to spend. The experience I gained from this programme was so useful and beneficial towards my decision, that I did not mind the money I spent. I really loved what Imperial had to offer to its students.
There was plenty of opportunities to speak to the teaching staff, who were very happy to speak about the course as well as career pathways. This gave a better understanding of what can be done with a physics degree, and the jobs that people have gone on to do. This is something I was previously not aware off.
You will also attend lectures and seminars, as well as conduct some experimental work in one of our teaching laboratories. Additionally, you will have the chance to meet members of our admissions team plus current undergraduate students. Finally, you will prepare a talk that summarises your week for presentation to your peers, external guests and staff members at a showcase event.
The Insights work experience programme is aimed at Year 12 students, so primary consideration will be given to students in this year group. Students applying for this programme must have Physics and Maths GCSEs and at least a grade B in English GCSE. You must also currently be doing Maths and Physics A-Levels.
For friend's who are interested in studying physics, I would definitely recommend this programme. It was really great to meet and speak to the teaching staff who very nicely explained the course in detail, explaining what is expected from students. Also it was great to see where you would be studying.
