    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the insight day. My conversation with Isheanesu (Ish) Gambe helped me gain a better understanding of the firm's culture, as well as the importance of his role as a data scientist. In particular, he helped me understand how to deal with work-flow issues and how these could be solved by maintaining effective communication with the project manager.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • There was never a time, where I felt I inactive. This is because: The graduates took the time out of their busy schedule to priorities us. The HR team accommodated all our queries before, during and even after the spring week, and also organised an incredibly insightful week. They also constantly asked for feedback to the way events were organised, which shows that our say matters. Likewise, RISE listened carefully to our presentations and took the time to consider our view points. It would be nice if we got more Barclays merch. I went to the Morgan Stanley insight and we got a hoodie and pens. You really felt that the firm wanted you.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • In many ways guidance and support came in many unstructured forms e.g. career advice and project advice from graduates, senior execs, among others. The main point was that these opportunities were available, and it's just up to us to figure out how to make best use of it. Overall great effort by everyone I met at the firm.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As an aspiring technologist, the 'Advanced Analytics' use-case was certainly a highlight for me as I saw it as an extension of hypothesis testing projects I have completed in R. However, I believe the takeaway was your ability to articulate complex concepts in a simplified manner. Coming from a technical background, this is a key area I aspire to develop further.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • Barclays events app could be improved by making the individual schedule clearer. This could be done by simple colour coding. A feature that would add the schedule to google calendar would also improve structure, because I personally use google calendars as my central calendar. In terms of event organisation. It would be great to see more networking opportunities with people not only from the retail side

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • I'd describe one aspect this way. Just for context I wrote this about 2 am. The kick you get from presenting to a panel of seniors is better than any of Canary Warf's finest roasts. And trust me I drink a lot of coffee. Just the thought of it gives you just the right burst of manic energy you need to kick-off that 6 am rise. Fast forward, and you're discussing and arguing with your multi-talented team, questioning your assumptions, and breaking down abstract regulatory concepts with diagrams, examples and simplifications. You learn to trust your highly innovative teammates and eventually great teammates make even better friends.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Good personal training. Got to shadow graduates within the emerging tech role, as well as a data scientist / developer role. Also HR team was able to manage preferences. Also an IDG workshop where we built on the importance of EQ, and gaining an understanding of how best to utilize different personalities / talents in different work/team situations.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • Good insight. Although could have been more balanced. We were able to understand what the differences in a project manager function as opposed to a purely executive (developer) function. Could have been more balanced to see and understand what drawbacks each role has. Most MDs in senior positions have built out careers lasting at least 5 years. Job security and mobility was something that's emphasized.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • Uniquely British. Most people working within Barclays is from the UK. One senior was talking about the reason she joined Barclays was because it's a firm dedicated to the UK, and it's something she's proud of. Core values of respect, integrity, service, excellence and stewardship. There are of course diversity programmes, but this is just my personal view.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • Interested in the data analytics role As an aspiring technologist, the 'Advanced Analytics' use-case was certainly a highlight for me as I saw it as an extension of hypothesis testing projects I have completed in R. However, I believe the takeaway was your ability to articulate complex concepts in a simplified manner. Coming from a technical background, this is a key area I aspire to develop further.

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • 250 squids

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Restricted to senior speaker sessions. There was one social event organised with the functions, and with graduates from internal audit and technology etc. I spoke to HR who was also part of the investment bank. Asked the person if I could do an informational interview with that trading function of the business.
