    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Cambridge office and it has been a great opportunity. It has been useful to network with people in the Savills office as I am particularly interested to work in Cambridge once I have graduated from university. It has been a great week to learn about daily tasks as a life as a surveyor, as well as applying knowledge I have so far learnt on my course.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I definitely feel the firm has valued me and tried their best to include me as much as possible. I was given a variety of activities which also included going out of the office. This added to my experience and gave me a feel for the variety of tasks the job has to offer.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • My mentor has been particularly great throughout the week being very friendly and supportive. I felt at ease to ask for help that I needed or to ask any general additional questions. The rest of the team taught me how to complete a range of tasks such as valuation reports. It was also useful to sit in on meetings to understand the situation and layout.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It will definitely help me understand the cross over between studies and how it applies to the job. Understanding how it works in practice gives me a better idea behind the reason for why things are done. It essentially puts most things into context which is a useful skill to take back to university.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • It worked well having the dial in conferences spread across the week rather than bulked together. The lunch with directors was also a nice way to socialise with the office as a whole and speak to others from different departments. Through this I also learnt more about other roles within Savills and how the team co-ordinates.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • It's been a very friendly and positive experience. There was always work to be getting on with whether it was at my desk, going out on sites visits or to meetings. All staff members seemed happy and content with their jobs at Savills which has given me a good impression about what it would be like to work for this firm. I have had a great week and wish to come back.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As I am only a first year student the team did a great job explaining tasks down to a fairly basic level then building up my knowledge. This was nice rather than being thrown in at the deep end and not understanding what things means. They also made sure that if anyone in the team was going out the office that I could go along as long as it was appropriate.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • It has given me a real understanding of what it would be like coming into work everyday as an employee of Savills. I think this is important, especially when it comes round to applying for graduate positions I can imagine myself here. It's also a useful insight into what its like to commute in and around the Cambridge area. This is something I haven't done before so its given me a real idea of what its like to commute, how long it takes and where's good to go in and around the area.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • I've learnt that networking has a key role to play within the property market and how having contacts to call on can really help. I also thought it was good how if for a reason you couldn't be in your allocated office, you could hotspot desk to another regional office that may have been easier to work from that day.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • It's been very helpful and definitely confirmed my thoughts on my future career path. Now that I am fully aware of this I can 100% dedicate my time and work into something that I know I will enjoy and want to do well in. This will now give me the drive to be successful.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • Yes, expenses can be reimbursed for travel, lunch and accommodation up to £100. I think that this is fair considering the insight program is only for one week and as a first year students we may not be as helpful as those 2nd and 3rd years doing longer schemes and know more.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • There were two networking events scheduled into the timetable we were given on arrival. But on top of this I managed to socialise with the team even further outside of working hours. This was a really great opportunity to get to know the team better and feel more at ease in the office.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • They were great and I loved getting to meet people from outside the development team. I think without the events people get stuck to their desks and its hard to intervene during the course of the working day. It is also nice to speak to people in a slightly informal manor.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Yes, three girls in my department are amongst sitting their APC's and they invited me along to an external APC quiz event. This was great fun getting an early insight into the APC route ahead and the types of things I will need to know. I also felt valued and included in the team when I had found out they had got me a space.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Definitely. It has been a great experience and I am so glad to have got it. It is such a great learning curve, networking opportunity and gives a good insight into working life. It is great that Savills offers this program as not many other firms do.
