About You
A very informative insight into roles within geoscience and petrophysics at BP. The day was well structured, with lots of opportunities to ask questions. A number of current graduates came to speak to us and gave lots of information about their jobs and their day to day lives at BP.
Everyone we spoke to made it very clear that BP sees its prospective interns and graduates as the future of the company, and hence they invest a lot of effort and money into schemes such as insight days. Having heard that there was a geoscience insight day going on, two very senior managers working in the upstream business decided to come and speak to us, even though they hadn't been asked to.
There was a session focused on the application process for an intern or graduate role, and we were given lots of interview tips. For example, part of the session was about structuring application or interview responses around the STARS technique. I feel that this advice will be very useful in both applying to BP and other large companies in the future.
The interview skills definitely will be useful. As it was an insight day, there wasn't much I learnt that I will be able to go on and use in my degree, but it was nice to give a practical application to the skills and knowledge I am gaining at university.
The Company
The programme was varied and interesting. There was the right balance of talks, interactive workshops and time for networking with BP employees. The only criticism I could give is that it might be good to be emailed the programme of the day beforehand, as it would give people chance to think of relevant questions to ask.
Very friendly and welcoming. We spoke to lots of different people within the upstream business, and everyone seemed enthusiastic and happy to answer questions. I got the sense that BP values it's employees, and I could see myself being happy working there in the future. The atmosphere made a really good impression on me.
As this was a one day insight into BP, clearly the personal training and development was fairly limited. However there was still a focus on interview and application techniques, which was useful. From speaking to current graduates I was impressed by the personal training and development opportunities available to them.
I got a really good sense of what it might like to work at the Sunbury offices, and the diversity within the roles of BP. There was a real focus during the day on talks from current graduates and networking with employees. What I've taken away from the day is how varied a career at BP could be.
Even after being there for only a day, it was very clear to me that BP values it's employees. The working environment is respectful and collaborative. BP revolves around its 5 values, and this is extremely evident from visiting the Sunbury site. The benefits for employees seem very generous too.
Lots of opportunities to ask questions and people from a number of different roles within the upstream part of the business came to speak to us. The tours and workshops gave a really good insight into a role within research or geoscience. The friendly and open atmosphere made me really keen to apply to BP for an internship.
Everything Else
Travel expenses were covered and food and drink were provided throughout the day.
It is clear that BP's open culture encourages lots of networking between employees, and lots of current graduates commented on how networking has helped them change roles within the company. The insight day has opportunities to speak to everyone from the early engagement team to current graduates to extremely experienced managers and professionals.
As above, lots of opportunities to speak to people after the talks over a coffee.
There is an on site gym and sports facilities eg tennis courts.
Very informative - as a result of this insight I am much clearer about my future career path and where I could fit in within BP. Even if I'd decided that BP wasn't for me, there was lots of information about the oil and gas industry and the workshops on interview technique would have been useful applying to any internship.
