    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Everyday in the office was different and this is something which I thoroughly enjoyed about my placement. Experiencing a variety opportunities throughout the year and being exposed to many situations, I was able to learn so much and develop not only my skills but as an individual. I have enjoyed my placement so much, I've not only learn't a lot, I've also met some really lovely people who I will remain friends with for life.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • From day one my team welcomed me in and couldn't of been more helpful. I was treated like a real member of the team and not just a 'placement' student. The work I carried out were real projects which would impact the business and being given the responsibility to take on these tasks was very rewarding.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • There was never a moment where I didn't feel like I could ask for help or support. My team members were always willing to give me the best guidance and advice to make my year the most beneficial. If I didn't understand something they were approachable and more than happy to assist me. I never felt like I was an issue or that any question I asked was a silly question.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Initially getting use to the role took some time and like anything I had moments when I would stare blankly at the screen. However this didn't last long and as I became more confident, I took on more responsibility and more projects. If I ever found myself with little to do I would always ask if I could help anyone as there was always something I could be doing to help.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • This was a real eye opener for me, prior to starting my placement I didn't think I would be given such big responsibilities and projects which would directly impact the business. I was given multiple tasks throughout my year which have given me insight into different areas within the business, allowing me to expand my networking.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed so many skills throughout the year which I know I will take forward with me in the future. From simple things like sending emails and developing my communication skills in the appropriate way, to increasing my confidence and presentation skills are skills which will help me in my final year. I have definitely developed a lot throughout the year which is motivating me to finish my degree.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyday was different but generally the atmosphere was very up beat and happy. Colleagues were always chatty and supportive of each other. Like anywhere, everyone had days which were stressful and people would be focused on their work. However overall the general office feel was very warming and enthusiastic which made it much more enjoyable to go to work.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The overall placement scheme is very well put together. From day one when we were settled into the partnership as a cohort of placement students and then we were welcomed into our teams. I was given a 1 week handover period which enabled me to ask questions and get as much support, before I started on my own. Throughout the year all the placement students had 4 sessions together based on different development skills which was very beneficial.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I have taken part in a couple of external development days in London, one being the IGD Development day. This was a very interesting day and I learn't a lot and was able to network with many people in the industry. I also joined the Waitrose coaching scheme which is an internal programme to help with any development or situations you wish to discuss.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Carrying out my placement has definitely given me a wider view of future jobs and career opportunities both within Waitrose and the wider food industry. I would love to return to the partnership in the future as an employee and have considered joining the graduate scheme as a next step after graduation.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a group of about 12 placement students who started together. This was a really good thing as we were all able to meet and get to know each other, knowing we were all in the same position. Throughout the year we went out together, went to events and socialised with each other. This was really nice to do as it was outside of work and I've made really close friends who I will stay in contact with.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • During my placement I lived in Reading in a student house. Having been a student at Reading university for 2 years already, I knew that the cost of living was quite expensive with costs of rent varying anywhere between £400-£500 pcm. Socialising in the area isn't any more expensive than anywhere else as most prices are student prices.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife is varied in Reading as this is where we would go out. There's a variety of cocktail bars and pubs and also clubs. Some clubs are better than others and on student nights are much busier. The clubs aren't huge like some towns/cities but when your with a good group of people it's still fun.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Depending on what your interested in their are quite a lot of opportunities. Waitrose has a variety of clubs and societies which you can join during your year. This is a good way to meet new people and socialise with other partners across the business. There are also other clubs in Reading which you can join but this isn't linked to Waitrose.
