About You
I had such an enjoyable time at Shearman and Sterling - a perfect balance of varied and engaging work, coupled with exposure to senior partners and an accurate insight into the culture at the firm. With a strong focus on personal development, this vacation scheme is a great learning opportunity for anyone interested in the legal profession.
Staff at Shearman and Sterling went out of their way to make me feel like a valued and respected member of the team. I was given interesting and engaging work with exposure to the managing partners at the firm. Networking events with senior staff demonstrated how important this programme is to the firm.
There is a great system of support at Shearman and Sterling and I was appointed with a trainee buddy and associate mentor for the practice area I sat in. Everyone I met was willing to give advice and guidance and the HR team was available for support throughout the vacation scheme.
This vacation scheme will certainly benefit me in the future. One of the key things that sets this vacation scheme apart from others it that it has a genuine focus on the work that trainee lawyers undertake. This allowed me to develop a vital skill set that will be much needed in my future pursuits in the legal sector.
The Company
I found the vacation scheme at Shearman and Sterling to be extremely well structured, with a good variety of activities organised for us. Furthermore, the structure of the scheme allowed us to develop vital skills and knowledge, with a variety of talks organised and the opportunity to spend time working on 'live' projects.
From the moment I stepped into the offices of Shearman and Sterling, I got a real sense of the friendly and welcoming atmosphere that sets the firm apart. Shearman and Sterling made a concerted effort to absorb the interns into the culture and we were treated to social events and activities, demonstrating the great atmosphere at the firm!
It was clear how much effort the firm went to in terms of investing in our personal development and training. I was provided with a comprehensive IT training session, which I found to be very beneficial as I will use these skills in the future. Furthermore, my trainee buddy and mentors were very invested in my personal development, providing great career advice and support.
During my time at Shearman and Sterling, I got a real sense of what it would be like to have a full-time role as everyone was so open about day to day life at the firm. Exposure to real work gave me a clear understanding of the typical work I could be completing if I had a full-time role at the firm.
As trainees, associates and partners were so open about their experiences at Shearman and Sterling, it was easy to gain an understating of the culture at the firm.
The content of this vacation scheme confirmed that I want to pursue a career as a Solicitor in a commercial legal setting.
Everything Else
I was paid more than enough to cover my living and travel costs for the duration of the vacation scheme.
I found there to be a good number of networking events on this vacation scheme. I had the opportunity to talk to people in various practice groups and gain a good understanding of the different work they do. We also had the chance to network with senior partners, which was a great opportunity!
I found the networking and social events to be really excellent. We had an amazing dinner at the Duck and Waffle, which was a really standout experience, providing the opportunity to get to know the trainees and other interns. Being treated to this event demonstrated how much the firm valued us as vacation scheme students.
Yes, I found out about various activities that employees can get involved in outside of work when speaking with staff during the networking events. Shearman and Sterling is very proud of its softball and five-a-side football teams. Trainees are actively encouraged to get involved with these teams to unwind outside of work.
I would absolutely recommend this vacation scheme programme to any friends considering a career in law!
