The Role
I enjoyed my internship at CRUK very much, I found the culture within the charity great. I was offered opportunities for personal development as well as responsibility for many tasks that were important in my role. Lastly, the chance to meet with other interns and develop social circles within the workplace was nice.
I felt quite valued by my colleagues, as I was responsible for many tasks required for my department each week. I was offered the opportunity to train other staff members up to take over the tasks I was carrying out during my internship which demonstrated to me my value to the team.
I was given good support at the beginning of my internship, however my manger left the company a month or so into my role which meant I was left with less of a support network. My new manager was helpful, however there was only so much he could support with. I think this was helpful in developing personally, because offered me the chance to take on a lot of responsibility, and gain a lot of knowledge in my department.
My business varied from week to week. At the beginning of my internship I felt very busy as I was not used to the tasks set for me and was therefore checking and double checking which made me work slower. My business was also dependent on the correspondence I had received in my email inbox each day as dealing with emails can take large chunks out of a day. At the end of the internship I felt less busy even though I was given various tasks to do as I felt more comfortable in doing them quickly and efficiently.
I was given a lot of responsibility, including running the sales reports each week, arranging couriers to deliver stock to ensure we had enough to sell that week and keeping communications updated to make sure shops were kept in the know. Due to my manager leaving, this responsibility was something I kept up independently during parts of my internship.
I hope that the admin skills and working in an office based environment as well as a corporate environment will offer me opportunities to go on to a similar office based role, where I can find out more about the kind of career I would like to build in the future.
The Company
the general atmosphere in the office is great, everybody is very friendly. All the interns were given the opportunity to learn about various roles within the company, and colleagues are willing to help boost your career options, also, the fact that we are all working for a vital cause is brilliant too!
The internship scheme was very well set up, recruitment, personal development opportunities and social life was really great. Unfortunately, my actual role did become a bit unpredictable because of my manager leaving as I was given lots of other unexpected tasks. However, this offered me new responsibilities and allowed me to develop my skill within the workplace environment.
I felt the company were very interested in ensuring we improved our career opportunities throughout the internship. We were given CV and cover letter writing workshops, linked in workshops and had access to internal job opportunities. We were also encouraged to look for work, and were able to leave the role at any time if another role was offered to us.

Although CRUK interns are not offered a role automatically after a 3 month internship, we still have access to internal jobs after we leave. Having worked as an intern in the company any future I am likely to have a stronger chance of getting internal roles I apply for.
The Culture
All the interns were very sociable and we were in contact on social media, we often had lunches together in the canteen, took part in charity fundraising and we arranged weekly socials. The team I worked in were very sociable and would also go out together outside of the workplace.
The cost of living in London is very high, although we had paid lunch and travel expenses as we were unpaid interns which reduced the cost a lot. As I have only just graduated and am from London I was able to live with my parents throughout the internship, which kept costs to a minimum.
There are plenty of pubs and cocktail bars around the area including a Wetherspoons and a Dirty Martini, as well as great places to eat such as Franco Manca and Vivo. There is also a tube station and many local buses which can take you to other more lively parts of London.
There are many opportunities to volunteer with teams outside of work including in big CRUK events. We also had fundraising opportunities as interns in creating a fundraising event for each week, some of which we took part in outside of work such as a pub quiz, the great row and a clothes sale.
