The Role
I really enjoyed my internship placement at CRUK. Everyone is super friendly, and keen to help me get as much as possible out of the experience. I was given flexibility and independence over my projects which allowed me to develop the skills I need to progress my career after leaving the internship.
As soon as I started I felt valued by my colleagues and felt part of the team. I was given real responsibilities in my work, and regularly had one to one sessions with my manager to feedback about the work I was doing, to ensure my work was of a high standard.
I was very well supported throughout the internship, and felt able to turn to my manager with any difficulties that I faced. I was also very supported by the intern organiser, [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions], who was always available to speak to if I have any problems I was unable to talk to my manager about.
Within my role I was helping out on the teams projects. Most of the time I was busy enough not to be bored, and I never felt too stressed or overloaded with work. At quieter times I was encouraged to work on my personal development using the resources which CRUK provided.
In general, I was given enough responsibility to feel valued and to feel as if I was making a positive contribution to the team and the work they were doing. I was always really supported, so if I felt overwhelmed by a project I could turn to someone in my team for help and guidance.
I will definitely use the skills I have developed throughout the internship in the future. The skills and knowledge I have gained have already helped my get a graduate job in a similar role. I have no doubt my new and harnessed skills will help me progress and succeed in my new role.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office is fairly relaxed, everyone is very friendly and welcoming, and happy to have a chat with you about the role / work they do. The office is open plan, and spacious, so it is a good office environment. Most people seem happy and fulfilled by their roles.
The internship is very well organized. We had an induction day to introduce us to the work that CRUK do, and all the different departments, and also meet the other interns. Throughout the internship we are provided with loads of workshops to aid out personal development, with a lot of useful resources provided.
CRUK really focus on your personal development and want you to get as much out of the experience as possible. We had workshops on presentation skills, linkedin, interviews, applications etc. The resources that were provided were really helpful, and HR were always happy to go out of their way to provide advice. For example, I had an assessment day, and had a meeting with someone from HR to discuss tips etc.

I would consider coming back to CRUK to work for them in the future. I have really enjoyed working here, and can see myself fitting in well at a more permanent role. However, for now, I am going to another organisation to start a graduate role. I am keen to keep an eye at the job vacancies as CRUK in the future.
The Culture
There was a good social scene with the other interns. As there are about 20 interns, there are plenty of us to do fun social events together. It was down to us to organise social events, so it does depend on the people on your internship, but most people seem to be keen.
I did not live in Angel where the office was based, however, I have been living in South London which is obviously very expensive. When we went to bars around the office they were fairly expensive, but as you would expect from London. The Spoons was the cheapest place to get a drink (as usual).
I didn't really go out out in Angel, but I believe the nightlife isn't that great. There are enough bars for you to explore, so good to socialise in the evenings. I think if you did a summer placement it would be better, however, I did my placement in the winter when it was too cold.
Yes - there were a lot of opportunities to get involved with the work CRUK are doing. For example, I did cash collections for World Cancer Day at the tube stations, which I really enjoyed. There were also lots of other opportunities to get involved with other fundraising events. You could also get involved with sports such as Netball, and lots of other things.
