    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have really enjoyed my internship at Cancer Research UK. I was given a great deal more responsibility than I thought I would be, which has provided me with more experience than I thought I would get from my placement. My project was set out clearly and I have enjoyed working on it.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My managers and colleagues have made me feel like a valued member of staff from very early on in my internship. This has only got stronger the longer I have been here and the more work I have done on the project. I feel as though my work has genuinely been appreciated.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I have been supported and guided by my managers and colleagues from the outset and throughout my internship. I have always felt comfortable asking questions. I also had weekly catch ups with my intern manager, which were wholly for my benefit in order to work on my development and check I was getting as much out of my internship as possible.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I have been really busy almost everyday of my internship. This is what I wanted as I wanted to make the most of this opportunity and it has enabled me to get as much experience as possible, through being involved in many aspects of the project I have been working on.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I have been given a lot of responsibility during my placement, a lot more than I initially thought I would have. I have formed and maintained relationships with media companies and negotiated advertising rates across the press, radio, online marketing and outdoor billboards. In addition, I have made a lot of payments to various media companies.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have completed my studies and my internship was not relevant to this. However, the skills I have developed are necessary for the type of jobs I will be applying for in the same sector. The skills will assist me in securing a role as I have gained a great deal of experience.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere of the office is very friendly and relaxed. The dress code is towards the casual end of smart casual which I really like and sets a nice tone. Everyone is polite and happy to help with questions. The team I was in were really nice people and we always had a laugh.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship is so well organised and set up. The internship is really well structured, in terms of how long it is and what we should achieve by certain times. Along with this the HR intern manager is absolutely brilliant and so organised, so I always knew where I should be at.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Cancer Research UK and specifically my team enabled me to develop. The scheme provided me with workshops such a C.V skills, interview skills and presentation skills which have benefitted me already. In addition, my team have supported me in developing my marketing skills and people management skills which will both be hugely beneficial long term.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would really have liked to continue to work at Cancer Research UK. I applied for two roles during my internship as I really wanted to stay. Unfortunately I was unsuccessful with both but this has not put me off applying for other jobs here, which I definitely will do.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, the interns nominated a social secretary who organised a few events across our internship. Aside from this, we went for drinks roughly every other Thursday after work with other interns. We also took part in intern fundraising and holding meetings coming up with ideas and organising the fundraising brought the interns closer together.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of socialising in the area is expensive as it is London, however there are benefits at a local pub that does a 20% discount for Cancer Research UK employees on both food and drink. There is a reasonably priced Wetherspoons really close by and a variety of lunch options.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife is good in the area, nothing too special though. There are a couple of pubs around that are reasonably priced and one in particular had a good atmosphere and a 25% discount for Cancer Research UK employees for both food and drink. There was also a few good bars.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, we had a good social group through the other interns. We had our own social events and also did our own intern fundraising which were fun and different. We rowed a marathon between us, did a clothes sale and a pub quiz which were all good to be a part of.
