    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my twelve month placement at Cummins Power Systems in Kent. It took me out of my comfort zone and kept challenging me throughout the year. Every new challenge presented a new opportunity and was extremely rewarding. Overall I would say that I thoroughly enjoyed it, 8 out of 10

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt immediately accepted by my colleagues in my team and department. They are really great to work with and are like a second family to me. I'm genuinely going to miss them once I go back to uni. Overall I would say that I was truly valued, 10 out of 10

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given support whenever I needed or asked for it, there was never a time where if I was unsure of something. There isn't anything more I could ask of my manager in terms of support. Overall I would say that I was supported as best as I could have been, 10 out of 10

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • To start with at the beginning of my placement I wasn't very busy and tended to finish work quite early and would find myself asking for anything else to do. However after a few months I was given a lot more responsibility and ended up being incredibly busy almost every day. 5 out of 10

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • To start with my responsibilities were very limited. However after several months, I was managing my own accounts and looking after a wide variety of customers, dealing with them personally on a daily basis. I was also not micromanaged and only was checked on weekly which mad me feel like I was trusted.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Throughout the placement I was put in numerous challenging situations and dealing with them has improved my problem solving skills which I can take forward in my future career. I also received a wide variety of training on management as well as different systems which I'm sure will prove useful.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There were a lot of redundancies in the year that I worked there so that meant that at times the atmosphere wasn't too great. However, overall and in general there was a pretty good atmosphere on a day to day basis

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The was a clear structure to the placement set up. There were regular reviews and catch up sessions, as well as regular training specifically for placements.

    5/5

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It was quite expensive to live where I was and even though the company paid well for placement salaries it would have been difficult to budget without the addition of the student loan.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • It was average to be honest, the nightlife was better at university.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was a lot of community involvement (CIT) events which were going into local schools and promoting STEM subjects as well as helping in local communities through clean up projects, as well as food and clothing drives for shelters and food banks
