About You
Part of my university degree requiree me to find work appropriate to my field (environmental biology). Placement with the bushcraft company helped me gain vaulable outdoor education experience with young people as well as teaching me bushcaft skills i now use in workshops.
The bushcraft compnay take on a lot of seasonal workers and hours are given to those who ptove they work hard and are reliable.
[This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] at head office was always suppoetive with any enquiries about pay or hours. The training foe this role is unpaid but it srts you up for the season very well.
They are not helpful for my degree in environmental biology but i want to persue working in education so i think the experience has been very valuable for that.
The Company
Most of the summer workers are students so its structured very well for students on summer leave.
Made lots of friends and had fun on the job
The bushcraft company are known to hire from within the company so there is a good chance of progression either into head office, the warehouse or coming back next year and under taking further training. During my initial training week i was offered the chance to take on extra responsibility for extra pay.
I took this insight to find out if working with kids and working in education would be something i should persue. The environment is vwry intense so its pretty much make or break to find out if you're equipt for working with children.
I got to know all senior management quite well and they were very good at explaining the opportunities for progression should you be interested in persuing them. I didnt spend any time in head office all my time was spent in the field.
Working for the bushcraft company is an intense experience because you are on the clock 24 hours a day. I think that the intensity of the role means you will either love it or hate it. Honestly i had the best time and foubd the work very rewarding so it cemented my ideas of pwrsuing outdoor education.
Everything Else
Paid £84 per day. Pay was monthly. The cost of uniform and disclosure background checks was deducted from the first salary. Unfortunately there is a week of compulsory training at a site just outside of london. This week is unpaid and is quite full on but passing this week is required to garuntee the job.
I was able to form very good relationships with my co workers. Due to the nature of the job you soend a lot of time with your co workers on a day to day basis. Most of my co workers came from a biological science background or environmental education so it was interesting to swap tios about other placements or volunteer work or extra curricular qualifications they had found advantageous.
At rhe end of the summer a big festival/party is organised for all the staff to thank them for their hard work throughout the season. This is a great opportunity to meet people from all different parts of thr company as well as a great opportunity to socialise and have fun.
I did not find out about any activities to get involved in outside of work from my employers however chatting to co workers with similar interests we were able to swap contact details for volunteer experiences and othwr activities to get involved in outside of work but off your own back.
Yes i would recomend the bushcraft company as they are student friendly and well paid the hourslt rate works out poor but per day the pay is over 80. Free accomodation as during your employment you live on site. This is useful for anyone who may live in halls and gets evicted for the summer duration. Good social opportunities with a work camp atmosphere and end of season parties. Working with the bushcraft comonay you kearn bushcraft skills that you may nit be able to pick up elsewhere.
